Loved One’s are Before All Have you ever had to choose between family or friends? I know I have. Throughout the short story “To Sleep Under the Stars,” Cecilia has to choose between going on her astronomical class trip or visiting her recovering grandmother. Although Cecilia is unhappy about missing her school trip, she begins to lighten up as she builds a close and strong bond with her grandmother. In Carol Shaw Graham’s short story “To Sleep Under the Stars,” the family relationship is the most important relationship across all of humanity. First, Cecilia’s mom rejected Cecilia’s request to go to the class trip instead of going to her grandmother’s. Cecilia begs to the planetarium and miss her visit to her grandmother; “...but we need to help out too. There will be other class trips. This time, family has come first” (1). While Cecilia argues to go to her class trip, her mother refuses instead to go see Cecilia’s grandmother. The thesis states that family relationships are important. If Cecilia goes to her grandmother’s, then she can build a close relationship with her. As said, Cecilia went to her grandmother’s house instead of going on her field trip. Cecilia’s grandmother remembers the time of the bonding of her and her mother as they left to the desert away from everything. Cecilia’s grandmother recalls the time of when she moved towards the desert for her mother’s illness; “I learned that winter how important family is” (2). When Cecilia’s grandma left everything to go with her ill mother to the desert, she built a strong relationship through their time together. Cecilia’s grandmother chose family first for her mother.
