For a Mexican to risk his life to illegally cross the border to get to the United States, he must have a good reason. The main reasons why someone would immigrate are to earn money, support family, or have a better life. Although these reasons all seem similar, the situation of the immigrant causes them to differ. Earning money simply means to earn money, while supporting one’s family means that they are not just earning money for themselves. The third reason, to have a better life, can be defined in different ways, but the main reason why someone would go to America for a better life is to either escape Mexico’s corrupt government or to live in a better destination. The Other Side of Immigration digs deep into the lives of actual Mexicans living in their unfortunate society. The reasons to make such a movement across the border are understandable considering the conditions Mexicans tolerate.
In the modern world, money is everything. Money is the reason some people are smarter than others, why some people have nicer clothes and bigger houses, and it is unfortunately one of the reasons for depression. When people are unable to receive a good education, which is only available for a high cost in most places, their futures are then put at risk. They wind up having a poor job that only pays for minimal food supply and a small house. Most Mexicans are farmers or factory workers, and it has been made clear in The Other Side of Immigration that working in the agricultural industry is a bad choice nowadays because the US has dominated the industry. The depressing atmosphere and lousy government has caused some to think that living in America is a fantasy, and they then decide to immigrate.
Despite their visions of a utopia, the immigrants realize that the US is not the fairytale they envisioned. Although the US is “better” than Mexico, society wise, the immigrants only migrate for money, family, or what they think is going to be a better life. With the few opportunities that people receive for jobs it is understandable why one would travel to find one. This is the same for money: it is smart to have money because in this expensive world it is the only thing that can make life survival. The three reasons why Mexicans immigrate are wise.
With the difficulties and the dangers of migrating are big, people are willing to risk their lives in order to reach the American Dream. People dream of making it to the US and having a big luxurious life when in reality all the jobs they can get is working in the fields and or factories. Coming from a life of poverty and despair would cause anyone to search for a better life; a life in which there is the belief that all of your dreams can come true. This is the belief that many Mexican immigrants had about “El Norte,” they believed that the north would provide them with the opportunity that their life in Mexico had not. Many Immigrants believed that the United States was “the land of opportunity,” a place to find a successful job and live out the life that one only dreamt about living. The North was an open paradise for the immigrants. They were told by the people who had already ventured to the north that the United States was a “simple life, in which one could live like a king or queen, but in reality immigrants were treated like slaves in the new country that promised them their dreams.

There is no denying that immigration will always be a factor in the development of the United States. Whether it is due to religious beliefs, economic problems or even war in their native country, emigrants will always come to America with hopes of starting a new life in the “Land of the Free”. Fortunately, the people who do choose to legally migrate to America are generally motivated for success and well-educated. Even the immigrants who are not well educated are motivated to succeed, work hard and take jobs in areas where labor forces are low or jobs that a native-born American may not even consider, effectively making them a contributing member of society.

There is no singular reason for immigration; motivations range from better economic prospects to political safety. As of late, the number of immigrants living in the United States is an estimated 11 million. Those who immigrate are expected to contribute to the United States culturally, politically, and economically. Yet, full assimilation becomes difficult to achieve when the immigrant is made into “the other” by the country of reception.
Migration for “a better life” or to be with one’s family shaped the history of the United States since the beginning. In the US today there are 40 million immigrants and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there is around 11 million illegal aliens already living right here and are not authorized to live and work in the United States. This lack of education stems off of the majority of Mexican immigrants, when first coming into the United States, having an inability to speak the English language proficiently and to have a simple understanding of the idiosyncrasies of American English.
