Technology advances very second of the day. I agree with Ray Bradbury on his opinion on technology and his two short stories “The Veldt” and “There will Come Soft Rains”. Technology is taking over our lives and it’s getting more dangerous by the second. Technology influences us so badly that we don’t even realize it. We are getting disconnected from the outside world, depending more on technology, trusting technology too much. Technology has made youths and adults stay inside and do everything online. But, they’re getting disconnected from the outside world. Instead of face to face interaction, we text, we get no physical activity, and not enough sleep, all because we are stuck on our technology. Bradbury’s stories show this and how we are so addicted and how it can leave consequences. “George Hadley and his wife whirled and ran back to the door."Open the door!" cried George Hadley, trying the knob. "Why, they've locked it from the outside! Peter!" He beat at the door. "Open up!" He heard Peter's voice outside, against the door. "Don't let them switch off the nursery and the house," he was saying. Mr. and Mrs. George Hadley beat at the door. "Now, don't be ridiculous, children. It's time to go. Mr. McClean will be here in a minute and..." And then they heard the sounds. The lions on three sides of them, in the yellow veldt grass, padding through the dry straw, rumbling and roaring in their throats. The lions. Mr. Hadley looked at his wife and they turned and looked back at the beasts edging slowly forward crouching, tails stiff. Mr. and Mrs. Hadley screamed.”(10) The two children didn’t want the technology to turn off because they were too addicted to it. So, they killed their parent’s using the technology. Have you ever sat at a table surrounded by friends whose eyes were glued to their phones? According to ABC News, kids spend an average of seven and a half hours on technology and only 38 minutes of reading in a day. In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, the society is very similar to ours. Technology has taken over and has made society very closed minded. People are unwilling to remove their eyes from large TV screens to see why things happen, and to notice all the little things in life that make it worth living. Without open-mindedness and curiosity, society would corrupt like in Fahrenheit 451, all because of an overuse of technology. Technology causes society to become a dystopia and once the society is one, there comes a point where you cannot reverse it. Bradbury emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the world and what happens when you become addicted to technology.

Although Drs. Restak and Samuel are both widely respected in their individual fields, Mr. Richtel’s journalistic career has been almost exclusively devoted to studying technology’s impact on our lives and attention, and his views are voiced loudly throughout his work, even though they are not explicitly stated. In the course of reading “Attention Deficit”, it can feel at times as if Dr. Restak had come to the conclusion that technology is damaging to our brains and our personal lives long before putting pen to paper, then proceeded to search for evidence to back up his viewpoint.

There Will Come Soft Rains is a short story that is taking place on August 4, 2026. A nuclear event of some kind has occurred sometime prior to the story, and no signs of human life are evident. There is only one house left standing and it functions independently, and has been completing its daily tasks as if the family still lives there.

Having a dependence on technology is like having an addiction to a drug. One relies on it to make them feel a certain way but it can totally change one’s emotions, feelings, actions and personality. Being dependent on technology can make one more agitated and lazy because the one might feel that they are not expected to do a regular task because they have machines to do them for them. Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World, works in both unison and division with author Ray Bradbury, who wrote There Will Come Soft Rains. By comparing and contrasting these stories we are able to delegate how our current actions towards humanity and technology may, or even may not, affect the future Huxley and Bradbury feel strongly for. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury argues that technology will take over the world with how he predicts; the parlor walls, the burning of books, and the types of people there are in society. In Fahrenheit 451, there are many ways that technology is portrayed as a bad addiction in society, for example, the addiction to the parlor walls. Society is so caught up on these parlor walls, it is a distraction and addiction from receiving the essential knowledge that they can get from reading books. Not only do the parlor walls take over their society, the books are getting burned which makes it harder for them to gain knowledge and, therefore, makes it easier for them to stay addicted to the parlor walls. The technology is so advanced that people are amazed and amused, calling it “family”.

As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also have many friends who use very little technology in their day-to-day living. This drastic difference makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it is healthy in the long run.
