The title of my book is “How I Live Now”. It was written by Meg Rosoff, and has 163 pages. I chose this book because of the variety of themes it covered within the 29 chapters. Some themes included were innocence and family. These were both interpreted in an unusual manner and was much unexpected. This really caught my attention and convinced me to complete the book. The story is set in the summer in England. It is the time in which conflict in Europe intensifies. The beginning of this book takes place in Aunt Penn’s rustic mansion. The house is surrounded by a garden, field of crops, and hills. The barn is only a short walk away. Nearby, is a river that connects to other parts of the countryside. The army moves in and Daisy and Piper are sent to another house. In the middle of the night, soldiers come to tell them that the enemy is going from house to house killing people. Daisy and Piper escape to an abandoned barn. Daisy plans to sneak off with Piper to find the rest of the cousins. After a week, Daisy and Piper decide to leave in the middle of the night. After some walking, thinking their lost, the two girls find the river which leads to where Piper’s brothers are. They return to the cousin’s house, but it is completely empty. Once, on the trip back to the house from the barn, the phone rings, and Daisy answers. Some major themes that the author deals with are innocence, suffering, warfare, and family. When Daisy arrives in England, she is surprised by the innocence of her cousins in the English countryside. She enjoys being a part of untouched and pure lives. She has an innocent relationship with her cousin, and all this is ruined because of the war. By the time the war ends, all the innocence has disappeared. For Daisy, she mainly suffers from starving herself. However, the war introduces new kinds of suffering, such as death, destruction, illness, loneliness, fear, and
