In my sophomore, high school Musical Theatre class, one of the most influential people in my life, my theatre director, offered a brilliant theatre and life lesson. He instructed us to find our passion and let that passion be our purpose. While seemingly insignificant to some members of my class, that lesson changed my life. I found a new paradigm through which to view my passions in relation to my entire life’s purpose. I took my passion, Musical Theatre, and transformed that passion into my purpose. I internalized my theatre director’s message and used it to form my own mission statement for my life: “Aspiring to inspire and be inspired, make a difference, and create great art.” This mission statement is the summation of everything that I am, and acts as my personal guide …show more content…

Theatre has the power to take people away from their current reality, teaching them, changing their minds, providing catharsis, and helping them empathetically understand their world. It also refers to my desire to help others find their purpose through my own. By performing, doing what I love, I have the opportunity to touch people and maybe inspire them to take chances, try something new, and actively seek happiness and fulfillment. I seek to inspire others while simultaneously being inspired. The “...make a difference…” aspect of my mission statement builds on the first. In addition to inspiring others and making a difference in that way, I aspire to use my passion to advocate for equality, arts in education, women’s rights, and proper mental health care availability for everyone. I can choose to work on projects that will open people’s minds, in turn impacting society ever-so-slightly.
