Katherine Ann Porter’s lamentable short story, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” illustrates that abandonment has the power to leave one scarred even years down the road. Porter’s utilization of stream of consciousness highlights Weatherall’s fixation on being left at the altar and the role this distress plays in her life, leaving her detriment.
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl.

The girl in the story writes about her relationship with her father and how it was very loving, and she always got what she needed and wanted. However, when her father passed away and she had to rely on her mother everything changed. There was never any food in the fridge, the power and water was shut off, and they were forced to move many times. They had to stay in motels or with friends of her mothers, and she missed a lot of school. Her father works out of town and does not seem to be involved in his daughters lives as much. Her older sister, who works at the school, is nothing but plain Jane. Connie’s mother, who did nothing nag at her, to Connie, her mother’s words were nothing but jealousy from the beauty she had once had. I read the book Lonesome Howl, which is a drama book and a love story. The book was about two main character whose names are Jake and Lucy. They lived with their family in two different farms, but in the same community besides a mountain covered in a big wicked forest where many rumors took place. The farmers around the place lost many sheep’s since a feral beast. It was a quite small community and a lot of tales was told about it to make it even more interesting. Lucy was 16 years old and lived with her strict father and a coward of mom who didn’t dare to stand up for her daughter when she were being mistreated and slapped around by her father. Lucy was a retired and quite teenager because of that. She had a younger brother whose name was Peter. Peter was being bullied in school and couldn’t read since the education of Peter was different compare too Lucy’s. She helped him in school and stood up for the mean bullies, although all she got in return was him talking bullshit about her with their cruel dad which resulted with her getting thrash.
My Favorite part of the book was when my character the Lady Bug girl tells the other girls, we don’t fight each other, we work together and everyone got along together. They all had fun on the playground.
My favorite part of the book would be when Smaug, the dragon, is killed. This is great because now the travelers can get the treasure much easier. Even though Bilbo wasn’t the one to kill Smaug, he was the one who provided the information to kill him. Bilbo found a soft spot on Smaug near his left breast. This is where Bard, one of the archers defending the town and a descendent of Girion, shot Smaug with an arrow and was victorious. The arrow killed the feared beast.
