The Truman Show Directed By Peter Weir uses various camera, light and other extensive cinematic techniques to show how easy it is to manipulate our lives. Through the course of this essay, we will explore the various cinematic trickery used to show life being manipulated. The cinematic techniques Weir uses to trick Truman can also be used to trick you, we will explore how. The use of flashbacks to key moments in Truman’s life are extensively used to express to the viewer what Truman is or presumed to be thinking. A flashback of his father drowning occurs when Truman is trying to board the fairy but struggles to cross the board walk. This is another aspect of control over Truman Christoph has where he can make Truman face his fears. Another key flashback that is the cause of him wanting to leave is a flashback to when he is with Silvia but she is taken away because she is revealing information about the truth to Truman. The lighting used in most of the Truman show is bright to make the town look like a happy place. Weir also reveals that the simplest things in life like the weather and even the sun raise and sun set can be controlled and manipulated. Marlon and Truman are watching the sunset when Marlon says “Look at that sunset, Truman. It's perfect” displays how the sun can be made to look perfect. If you knew something as it is your whole life you would just accept it like the sunset being so perfect. Once Truman finds out that he is being controlled he tries to escape a sudden burst of fire runs across the road while not in the forest.
