Psychological Burdens of War
In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”, raises the issue of physical and emotional burden on the soldiers in Vietnam. It is easy to identify that the soldiers are carrying items that are of both physical and emotional burdens. The soldiers also suffer from psychological burdens during and after the war. The soldiers suffer from fear of shame, guilt, grief, and confusion. They are also isolated which causes they to worry which can be just as dangerous as the war if not more. In “The Things They Carried” the soldiers carry items with them that are both physical and emotion burdens that distract them from the the war.

The impact of loneliness on the soldiers as well as thoughts, worries, and fears are more dangerous than the war itself. Loneliness causes the soldiers to be distracted by relationships and other happy memories from the past. The items the soldiers carry help them deal with this loneliness of war by having a piece of home with them. In Vietnam, isolation symbolizes the endless time to dwell on the unknown. The soldiers think about home and the moments they are missing. They think of what could happen to them during the war. Loneliness remains with the soldiers long after the war is over. For example, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross feels lonely after the war because his hope for a relationship with Martha is ruined by her rejection. The soldiers that survive the war carry with them guilt, grief, and confusion. For example, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross tells in O’Brien that he has never forgiven himself for the death of Ted Lavender. Soldiers coming back from a war suffer from many psychological problems that can lead to their death. The many traumatized soldiers have become a contributing factor of the Vietnam War. PTSD is evolved in a large part from the returning soldiers from Vietnam. Lacking the support from home was an important factor accounting for a soldier’s post war stress. Prior to the Vietnam War soldiers coming back from war were viewed as heroes, Vietnam War soldiers came back home viewed as murders. Normally these war heroes were encouraged to talk about their war experiences but in this case, they were not. O’Brien wrote this story asking us to help carry the burden of the Vietnam
