When studying kinship, it is needless to say that just one type of
society can justify for kinship patterns; rather, to be able to
identify and understand the differences of kinship systems, one needs
to do a cross-cultural comparison. I’ve decided to compare the system
of the Trobriand Islanders of the South Pacific, to the very loose
kinship arrangement of the Ju’wasi San of the Kalahari. These two
societies have been chosen as they represent different levels of
social, cultural, and technological complexities. The Ju’wasi were
gatherers and hunters, living in small, mobile groups; the
Trobrianders were horticulturists living in villages of up to 400
people.
The Trobrianders (Malinowski: early 20th century and Powell: mid 20th
century) live in some 80 villages whose populations range from 40 –
400. These villages are further divided into hamlets, and each hamlet
consists of a matrilineage, or a dala (a group of men related to each
other through the female line, along with their wives and children). A
dala is a corporation that controls land. Each dala had its origin in
a brother/sister pair who claim a plot of land. The dala marriage is
traced through the female line and individuals must marry someone from
outside their own dala. Their households are composed of wives,
husbands, and children. Males 12-151 years of age go to live with
their father (patrilocal residence). If the male will inherit land
from the dala of his mother’s brother, he lives with his uncle
(avanculocal residence); the father, in this case, is considered as an
affine, or an in-law.

The social and political organization of the Basseri and the Nuer are very much different. The Basseri’s social organization is based upon that of nuclear families; they are also neolocal, meaning that upon marriage a couple starts their own nuclear family in a new tent. After marriage, in order for the couple to begin a new household, the husband usually receives part of his father’s herd and at times, if not given any animals, the husband can work and receive animals as a payment. During the spring, the nomadic tribes can be supported in large numbers in a single camp; while during the winter, camps are setup in smaller groups. The Basseri reckon descent patrilineally where inheritance is usually from father to son. A woman bestows membership rights to her own tribe or her offspring. The Basseri consider themselves one unified tribe because they are all subsumed under the authority of a single leader, the chief of all the Basseri.
In the novel Waterlily by Ella Cara Deloria, kinship plays a key role in the depiction of Dakota society in the novel. Throughout the novel, kinship is instrumental in the development of community ties and familial relations throughout Dakota society. With her depiction of kinship roles and obligations, Deloria argues that kinship brings honor and interconnectedness between the members of society. Through her portrayal of Waterlily’s communities ties, her view of kinship practices is strengthened through her illustration of the Dakota civilization’s view that kinship practices help extend graciousness throughout their community and create bonds that last throughout generations.
Dadi is a group of people in northern India, the village consist of five hundred families, people who are related by ties of marriage, blood, or social/ legal affirmation. These families live with an established residence of patrilocal, meaning the household consist of the husband’s parents, brothers and their brother’s wives and children. Dadi’s families have post-marital patterns and pros and cons for each of the family members. Mosuo on the other hand is an ethnic group from southwestern China who also live in a patrilocal community but have matrilineal ties meaning they help each others family but live with their own. In this society the women have different positions than in the Dadi society.

Sleeper-Smith’s understandings on marriage between native women and fur trader’s complements with the study of the evolution of family law. It supports the idea of marriage as a means to create a family and the family is an economic unit (Briggs, 2016a). Fur trade was the major economic activity at the time (Briggs, 2016b). The native women, the author presented entered into marriages primarily for economic reasons and were seen as attractive to traders for economic reasons. To solidifying trade ties, partnerships, and later to enter the trade as independent traders through kinship network that comes out of marriage. The coinciding with how women with their own economic worth are able to subvert the patriarchy embedded into early society. Where husbands held all the power and authority in the family (Briggs, 2016a). Sleeper-Smith presented how native women were valuable, not just as property, or a means to legitimate procreation. Native wives as being an asset as a partner to their fur trader husbands because they controlled productive resources and increased access to trade goods (Sleeper-Smith 2000, p.429). Giving native women power in a relationship that they would traditionally have none or very little.

Everyone in the world belongs to a subculture. Each subculture has its own sets of traditions, relics, and artifacts. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. Families are good examples of subcultures. My family, a middle-class suburban Detroit family of Eastern European heritage, has helped shape who I am through story telling about traditions, artifacts, and relics.

Subsequently, the idea of traditional family evolved and a married couple with children is at present, often called the traditional family. There are many types of families; however, this paper will focus on the traditional family. It will describe how the functionalist perspective, conflict perspective, and the interactionism theory apply to the sociological institution known as a family. It will explain some of the similarities and differences between the sociological theories in regards to families and how they affect the family members.
