What do you think of when you hear the word home? I think of comfort, love, and of coarse the sweet smell of warm apple pie. The first thing that you notice when visiting someone’s home for the first time is the smell. If the first thing you smell when you walk into someone’s home fore the first time is a dirty wet dog, the chances are you won’t want to revisit that house. That’s why the smell of your home is so important, not only for the people who visit but also for the people who live there. Each room in my home has a different and wonderful smell. It ranges from the bedroom and living room, where I like to relax, to the kitchen where all the cooking is done.

After an eventful night of dancing at nightclubs, I never expected to have the most flavorful tacos reach my mouth. At four in the morning we found ourselves at a small, local hole-in-the-wall where most tourists would not be caught dead at. Even though they were the greatest tacos I have ever had, what I ate most while I was there was tortilla soup. Topped with melted cheese and strips of fried tortillas I devoured a bowl from a place our friend Oscar worked at, Margarita Grille. I am not a soup person but this is something I still crave weekly, as well as the salsa they served. Fresh roasted tomatoes were crushed at our table and mixed with garlic, onions, jalapenos, cilantro and juices of a lime. A scoop of the colorful vegetables on a warm, salted tortilla chip will satisfy your taste buds and keep you going for more. Because Margarita Grille was only a couple blocks from our hotel in the “old town” of Puerto Vallarta, we ate there five or six times. Now they are real estate.” (Quindlen) These structures are no longer viewed as places of experience and reminiscence, they are given a literal and unemotional purpose. Perhaps the reason as to why nearly one million people are homeless is because they are no longer provided with the pure substance of what a home represents. A home is “everything” , one cannot be a fulfilled individual without one for it offers a sense of self, demonstrates a loving relationship and provides an unfailing feeling of entitlement.
The novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Süskind takes place in the densely populated and repugnant slums of 18th century Paris where protagonist Jean-Baptiste Grenouille resides as a lowly peasant with an incomparable sense of smell that sets him apart from the rest of the world. However, Grenouille is unaffected, and endures the hardships of brutal peasant life with an iron will, in the hopes of discovering every scent the world had to offer as his only motivation for living. He craves to be alone to further enhance his knowledge in capturing scent; Grenouille becomes so estranged and enthralled in the art of capturing fragrances that he sets out on a quest to concoct the “ultimate perfume” which leads him to commit a series of murders to capture human scent. Süskind, by way of Jean Baptiste’s obscure life and fine nose allows readers to explore the concept of alienation and the effects it has on the character development of Jean Baptiste Grenouille.
The narrator in “The Axe” by Penelope Fitzgerald is the Manager of an unsuccessful company. This unnamed protagonist addresses a letter to his elitist, stereotypically self-important boss. The Manager explains the outcome of the redundancies that he had been assigned, reporting in full detail the termination of his clerical assistant, W.S. Singlebury, an older gentleman whose work is “his life” (Fitzgerald 667). In his letter, the Manager repeatedly makes reference to a pungent smell in the office, about which many staff members complain. The smell of the building is brought up at crucial points in the narrative, and thus the sickening scent, combined with dampness, becomes a strong motif throughout the story.

My house is always crazy, with my dog barking, and my siblings running around making noise, my room is the only place in the house where I can come and relax without caring about everything else, the only place that I can go to clear my mind.
There is a familiar saying, which is along the lines of, "Home is where the heart is." This is true for most, but often, people are forced to leave their homes and relocate. Often, this causes a sense of uprootedness and confusion. One's most precious memories are often left behind. Confusion results from the loss of familiarity and a sense of having little or no ties to a new place. Sometimes, the changing of homes may be quite devastating, but eventually overcome or in the worst case, the uprooting could cause a lifelong disappointment and result in a loss of feeling of a sense of belonging which is a key to living a full life. The people of the former towns of New Bordeaux, Petersburg, and the Ridge community were all too familiar with the feelings of hopelessness. Although these people faced great challenges and hardships, they are quite heroic because many were able to accept the devastating changes, but eventually moved on and hopefully found a new "place" while never forgetting their past.
