Once the slavery mode of production was established, the population was divided into free men and slaves. Slavers enjoyed, to a greater or lesser extent, civic, patrimonial, and political rights. Slaves lacked all these rights. The emergence of private property and the division of society into classes necessitated the emergence of the state with the development of the social division of labor between the different branches of production. The state arose to restrain the exploited majority, in the interests of the exploiting minority. The slave state played an important role in the development and consolidation of the production relations of the society based on slavery.
