Conquests seemed to come easy to Rome. But the conquests brought the desire for more and more power. They were greedy, greedy for the power and the wealth they gained from plundering their conquests. (Morey, 1901) As more land and personal property was seized, more citizens found themselves salves to the Romans. These provincial citizens had no rights and the Roman aristocracy had little incentive to provide them with any. (UNRV, 2003) There was a great divide between the classes. While the Optimates’, or the new aristocracy, took more land, those who had once been small farm owners, found themselves not only landless, but also jobless. They migrated to the city. This put a drain on the limited supplies and left them feeling disenfranchised.
