Today police officers are under more scrutiny then ever before. This is due in case to technology and now all there actions are recorded by the people, since everyone has a phone with a camera these days. The biggest problem that’s been talked about is police excessive use of force.
When we have cases all over the country where officers have come in scrutiny over their use of force and whether it was justified. Examples of these cases can be seen in such instances as the Oscar grant case and Fergusion more recently. These are just two events that took a national heading over police use of force and whether the officers were justified or not. The first thing that needs to be understood is that police at times have to use some type of force or authority to subdue suspects. Its something the people trust in police officers and its something we need to understand. What exactly is excessive force. That’s the problem there is not a clear definition of it. As stated by ABC news “Excessive force is a slippery metaphor: experts say it’s any force beyond what’s necessary to arrest a suspect and keep police and bystanders safe.There are some moves, like choke holds, that are altogether barred in certain jurisdictions” (Segan, …show more content…

An issue associated with the training of police officers is that there are not enough funds to give police officers the proper training needed to be most successful. Cordner states “Education and training cost money, though. Particularly in the last two to three years, diminished resources may have led to reductions or postponements of police training in many countries” (Cordner 2011). With a lot of cities already short on funds its hard to keep police trained properly so essentially were setting police officers up for failure by not providing the proper training that is needed. In contrast that would be like people getting mad at a heart surgeon for not having proper training for doing heart surgery due to funds being cut low.
