One of the most important part of operating a business is recruiting the right staff. The directors of clinical services at Appalachian Home Health Services, Inc ., Frances Matthews and Kate Hennessey, are currently in a predicament in regards to hiring a new employee. One of their current staff nurses turned in her 2 weeks' notice for resignation because she is relocating with her husband out of state. Therefore, they are in a rush to hire a new staff nurse to meet their work load given that their regular staff nurses were working to capacity. They posted a classified ad in the local newspaper for a job opening at Appalachian Home Health Services for a Registered Nurse. Is it ethical to disqualify an applicant who has been convicted of a felony even thought it was in self-defense? The article "An Organizational Ethics Decision-Making Process" by William A. Nelson states that "if the process is fair, the outcome will more likely be fair as well". The article also states that "decision makers must take into account the perception and values of those affected by the decision". Both Matthews and Hennessey should take this into consideration when making their decision on hiring Margaret. We should look at the pros and cons in deciding whether or not to hire Margaret. The pros of hiring Margaret include her Bachelors of Science in Nursing, extensive past work experience, great references and the ability to start work immediately. The cons of hiring Margaret include that she is a convicted felon. Based on these facts I believe Appalachian Home Health Services should hire Margaret. She has the skills, her past employers vouch for her ability to work hard and assimilate with the work environment at Appalachian Home Health Services.
