In the world of policing there are typically two ways to respond to problems that arise. The first is the idea of taking a proactive approach to policing and attempting to prevent an issue before it occurs. The second is a reactive approach, which involves responding to a problem or incident that has already taken place. The idea of community oriented policing can be likened to proactive policing methods, whereas problem-oriented policing is similar to reactive policing. These two ideas differ, but can also be used in conjunction with one another to accomplish the same objective.
