The thought of using artificial intelligence to create romantic relationships with human beings have always been a controversial topic in society, but what is artificial intelligence? Its definition, defined by John McCarthy, is "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable" (McCarthy 2). Though Dr. Curran and Dr. Carpenter believed there were different benefits when it came to creating a relationship with AI, they both believed each individual who engaged in a relationship with the AI was able to receive a positive outcome in them or in their lifestyle whether the outlook was a topic of love or comfort. Both experts have explained the negative outcomes that may arise when forming the relationship with AI to where the individual would experience a form of sadness or anger whether it 's in the form of realizing the love between them was false or unable to cope without an AI in their presence.
Though there were many pros and cons discussed on the use of forming a relationship with AI for comfort or romance styled relationships, each expert has kept a neutral stance on the issue by stating that they felt individuals would benefit from the aspects in both a good and bad way. Yet she fails when restricting her support to her personal encounters and lacked power due to the many logical fallacies presented earlier such as her constant generalization, emotional appeals and finally the lack of counter argument. In the end, the reader is left with questions concerning virtual love, the physical world, and the ultimate desire to attain happiness since it’s quite hard to imagine that someone would be convinced with the idea of Daum simply due to her own experience.
In the introductory part of Wallach and Allen’s book, they present three essential issues, one of them is “does the world need AMAs?”(p.9) Wallach and Allen give a positive answer, they believe that with the rapid development in new technology and mechanization, intelligent autonomous robot begin coming into our lives, AMAs may bring a variety of ethical and social issues, in support of artificial intelligence, to human society. People love to read stories and watch movies of a science-fictional society that include robots with artificial intelligence. People are intrigued with the ability of the robots that seem to demonstrate what we humans consider morality. Eando Binder’s and Isaac Asimov’s short stories, as well as the 2004 Hollywood movie, all carry the title “I, Robot” and introduce possible futuristic worlds where robots are created and integrated within society. These stories challenge our perceptions about robots themselves, and could perhaps become an everyday commodity, or even valued assistants to human society. The different generations of “I, Robot” seem to set out the principles of robot behavior and showcase robots to people in both different and similar ways. How does the Robot view itself? More importantly, how does society judge these creations? The concepts discussed in these three stories covers almost 75 years of storytelling. Why has this theme stayed so relevant for so long?
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
What are the ethics of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)? Many people see different sides regarding this issue. One side sees is that A.I. will be the downfall of humanity, while the other sees an upgrade for humanity. However, these are merely situations that are can be unethical. People have been discussing about this topic a lot and some ethical concerns that will be humanoid robots and robots taking over the work industry. Ethics is according to Britannica (2015) is the “discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad, right and wrong.” This paper examines some of the ethical issues and sides that is happening because of (A.I.)
Essentially, this means humanity is attempting to create a being that can think for itself and have emotions, but is not biological. If this technology is developed, it could mean that big corporations can use this technology to manipulate the public. If artificial intelligence becomes able to detect emotions from humans, companies can use this tactic to make people believe that these robots care for them. Detecting emotions can lead to synthetic reactions from the robot, which can be misinterpret as real emotions from the artificial technology. Robots will never feel all human emotions because they are not biological creatures, for example robots can never feel hunger because they do not have hormones or DNA (Maciamo Hay). Additionally, if big companies get their hands on strong A.I., they can truly learn about human emotions and thinking processes from a logically point of view. Researching and testing on strong artificial intelligence will allow these companies to gain information about the human mind and how it functions; this can be dangerous because they could potentially use this newly found information against the public. Robots can only do what they are programmed to do. if Damasio is right, emotions are ‘improvised’ by the human brain even before someone is conscious of what they are feeling. Therefore it is even harder to make machines feel true emotions. An example of this exists in Ray Bradbury’s short story “August 2026.” A completely automated house survives after nuclear warfare has devastated the Earth. Cheerful voices go on announcing schedules and birth dates, the stove prepares steaming hot food right on time, and robotic mice keep the house spotless and free of dust- in eerie contrast to the barren and destroyed city surrounding it. The house lets nothing in, closing its shutters even to birds, but lets in a sick and famished stray dog, which limps into the house and dies. The robotic mice think nothing of the dead dog but a mess that needed cleaning up: “Delicately sensing decay at last, the regiments of mice hummed out as softly as blown gray leaves in an electrical wind. Two-fifteen. The dog was gone. In the cellar, the incinerator glowed suddenly and a whirl of sparks leaped up the chimney.” The house, seeming so cheerful, caring for its attendants, has no compassion or reverence for the dog. Margaret Boden’s “Artificial Intelligence: Cannibal or Missionary” is a credible primary source article rebutting common concerns of artificial intelligence. Boden uses strong logic to combat against the thought of artificial intelligence making humans less special and artificial intelligence causing people to be dehumanized. Technology is always updating and producing new things, the reason for this is because technology is not perfect. So this means that there is always room for change and improvement. There are still flaws in technology, including things such as printers jamming, internet crashing, and phone calls dropping. Why is it that, even with all of these flaws, people still turn to technology excessively? Turkle talks about people having the desire to have a robotic relationship in place of a real human relationship. She discusses a girl who wanted to “trade in her boyfriend ‘for a sophisticated Japanese robot’ if the robot would produce what she called ‘caring behavior’... She was looking for a ‘no-risk relationship’ that would stave off loneliness.” (Turkle 269-270) This may make you question, the same way that technological devices always need improvement, won’t the robots need improvement at one point. The robot may make a mistake or even be missing the new and improved characteristics of a human being. These characteristics can include the ability to have a meaningful conversation rather than a conversation limited to a scripted vocabulary. While we are not expecting any hovering cars anytime soon, artificial intelligence is projected to have a major impact on the labor force and will likely replace about half the workforce in the United States in the decades to come. The research in artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly at an unstoppable rate. So while many people feel threatened by the possibility of a robot taking over their job, computer scientists actually propose that robots would benefit a country’s efficiency of production, allowing individuals to reap the benefits of the robots. For the advantage of all, researchers and analysts have begun to mend the past ideas of human-robot interaction. They have pulled inspiration from literary works of Isaac Asimov whom many saw as the first roboticist ahead of his time, and have also gotten ideas of scholarly research done by expert analysts. Because it is a bottom-up robot, it learns while it cleans and will find the most efficient way to clean a room. If it runs out of battery while its cleaning, it will go back to the dock to charge, then finish its job once it’s charged. The collected dirt is put in a bin on the robot, so humans can empty it when the bin gets full. Robots like the Roomba take care of jobs that humans do not want to do, making life easier and for humans. It also can do a better job of cleaning, especially when we do not want to clean ourselves, or have to clean a lot of space.
Artificial intelligence has become a big controversy between scientists within the past few years. Will artificial intelligence improve our communities in ways we humans can’t, or will they just cause danger to us? I believe that artificial intelligence will only bring harm to our communities.
