Similar to our verbal talk, non-verbal communication can also produce mixed signs. As a listener, you are confronted with the challenge of deciding what message to interpret. Brownell (2013) discusses in the text how non-verbal communication is an unconscious style of communicating that brings out your accurate feelings. The way you look, move and respond gives cues to your partner to whether or not you are following and if you are being honest or how well you are listening (Brownell 2013). Additionally, if your non-verbal signs accordingly coincide with the words you are speaking, this can be a large boost in your trust.
Self-concept plays a vital role in self-assessment. “Self-concept can be defined as an appraisal of your own attributes and competencies.” (Sole, 2011). Self-conception can prove to be a difficult task in and of itself because one must be brutally honest with themselves; but having the ability to recognize one’s shortcomings in regards to communication creates the foundation for the success of improvements. Those improvements will inevitably create a strong, positive sense of self. To develop our language skills of English and personality, we have to be very confident on what we talk and be a patient listener towards another person so as to what he is talking. One of the important factors is the body language. Speaking only with your words isn’t enough, we ought to coordinate our movements of eyes and hands with the words we speak to have an effective image of our visualizations of the speech. How to do so?
1. Choose a specific non-verbal area, as discussed in the lecture and text that you feel is essential to interpersonal communication. Describe what it is and defend why it is essential. Points will be earned by the description and argument you make. Nonverbal communication is more credible – it means that although we often hear the spoken message, during certain events, what we do is more credible that what we say.
This approach softens the time that I am engaged with the person, and knowing that the issue at hand could possibly affect more than just who is in the room is all the more reason to be mindful of how I treat that person. After you listen, you must then summarize what was discussed. Summarizing is another essential communication skill used in the practice of communication to make sure that we heard what was said and to get clarification on anything we didn’t understand. Instead of thinking that summarizing means that the individuals were not listening, think of it as an enormous contributor to the effectiveness of listening. We have to embrace the reality that communication is a two way street. Taking the time, to find out the real problem will make it a lot easier to find the most appropriate solution. While every problem cannot be approached like a math problem, understanding the fundamentals can make resolution that much easier. Avoid the communication pitfalls by refraining from the refusal to communicate and or pacification, which means to soothe or calm someone by being nice or by giving in to demands. These behaviors are counterproductive to effective interpersonal communication and show a lack of understanding.
He stated, “In expressing our feeling, it helps to use words that refers specific emotions, rather than words that are vague or general” (Rosenberg 43). This I found was important and difficulty since, someone could say how are you? I would reply “doing fine” versus explaining how I really felt with better vocabulary.
