Above the zoos and aquariums, who are just as guilty of exploiting animals for business, is SeaWorld. Since its inception in 1964, SeaWorld has been able to create a public image to the American general public that they treasure the protection of amphibious mammals like seals, otters and above all else, whales. The marine-mammal-themed amusement park has attracted millions of customers worldwide to see the likes of Shamu and Tilikum. What SeaWorld refuses to admit to the public and organizations like the Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA), are inadequate living conditions for the animals, disturbing truths in the cooperation’s breeding practices, and how entertainment value is above all else. Although the extinction of the whale is a foreseeable consequence without proper protection, SeaWorld is contributing more to the problem than any amount of money they give to ORCA and other organizations.
This accomplishment had ensured the safety for the trainers, but it still does not ensure that the killer whales will ever have a better life outside of captivity. With the sudden increase of commands from the public that Seaworld next step should be to remove the killer whales from the tanks, SeaWorld is fighting back with idea to expand the tanks and create a safer facility for the animals (Adler). With the pathetic determination from Seaworld to still captivate the killer whales is causing a huge business loss for
With these breeding programs, females and the calves experience unnatural circumstances within captivity mostly leading to infection/illness or even death. An example of so is that of Gudrun, a female orca that went into labor. During her labor, trainers and specialty doctors could not find the pulse of the unborn calf, presuming the calf dead. The pain must have been unearthly, making the mother, Gudrun, begin to hemorrhage. Days went by before Gudrun moved painlessly around in her tank. Few hours later, Gudrun died. The list is endless for all the stress factors the killer whales live through and the impact just keeps getting colossal.
This case sought the release of the whales into an ocean sanctuary where they could be protected and also be able to have a wider range of movement as well as the opportunity to communicate with other ocean animal, and engage in the natural behaviors for which they been denied for so long. Marisa Miller a spokesperson for PETA and a mother of two, last year saw the movie Blackfish. She said “Being a mom and seeing [the SeaWorld-critical documentary] 'Blackfish,' it was extremely emotional.” “I think any mother knows the sense of protection and connection you have with your baby.” SeaWorld takes away the calves from their mother at a young age where they need their mom the utmost. For one of the PETA campaign to boycott SeaWorld Marisa posed nude while pregnant in a dirty and empty bathtub. The bathtub is used as a metaphor in which it resembles the size of the tanks at SeaWorld. The tanks they do their tricks in are nowhere near the size of where an wild killer whale would live. The filthiness of tub resembles Seaworld use of outdated medical supplies, the cracks and crumbling concrete and rusting beams that could fall in the pool, and be eaten by the whales, and also the repeated failure to provide drain covers that are securely fastened in order to minimize the potential risk of animal entrapment that resulted in the death of a sea lion. Also Marisa Miller is cramped in the bathtub much how the whales swim in their own bathtub compared to the
The first whale was bought for $8,000 by someone who captured it accidentally near Namu, British Columbia. After this he captured a female in the Puget Sound and named her Shamu. Whales continued to be captured and brought to perform as SeaWorld and other aquarium (SeaWorld Tragedy). Howard Garrett an OSHA researcher describes the strategy, “They [hired trappers] had air craft, they had spotters, they had speed boats, they had bombs they were throwing in the water… to herd the whales into coves.” Once the orcas were surrounded by nets the trappers would pick out the young calves. Once they were in the corrals they would drop the nets so that the...
In the small harbor town of Taiji, the government keeps a secret; over twenty-three thousand dolphins of all ages are corralled and slaughtered within one of the town’s very own coves every year. Taiji is just three hundred sixty miles away from Tokyo, Japan and lies in a shielded alcove of a bay. The surface of the bay is extremely rocky and the waters are shallow, holding an abundance of islets and rock spurs, which make it easier for the slaughterers to complete their immoral task. The dolphins that are victims of this tragic occurrence range from newborns to elders. Some dolphins are even carrying their young when they are slaughtered. The government attempts to hide this terrible circumstance from the general public of Japan; however, there is an even bigger issue at hand which the government also attempts to conceal. Dolphin meat has an extremely high level of mercury content.
Because orcas are such social animals, a whale being separated from its pod is emotionally and psychologically devastating for him/her and the rest of his/her pod. This mental damage is what causes orcas to become aggressive and hostile in captivity. Upon being moved to a different location, twelve-year-old Takara’s mother, Kasatka, shook, wailed, and used long distance sonar to try to find and communicate with her baby. SeaWorld trainers had never heard any sounds like Kasatka’s cries; especially not from Kasatka, whom is usually a subdued whale. SeaWorld denies ever separating any calves from their mothers. However, SeaWorld has torn a total of 19 calves away from the mothers, some while still

Arroyo Fresco (AF) is a community health center (CHC) serving western Arizona from 11 clinics and 4 mobile service vans. AF was founded in 1968 by Joe Regam and Martin Rosales, two activists that have a commitment to providing healthcare to the underserved. They converted a gas station in Yuma into their first clinic with the assistance of the Migrant Worker Project. Their goal was to create a place where one can be refreshed in a vast, harsh desert, which led to the name “Arroyo Fresco” or “cool, flowing stream.” The mission of AF is to provide residents of Yuma, La Paz, and Mohave counties easy and timely access to high – quality and safe health care services, responsive to their diverse cultural and socioeconomic needs, regardless of their ability to pay (2006, p. xix).
Application
What is currently obtained in the Arroyo Fresco community are the services provided to underserved areas in all the 50 states of the United States, unlike time past when the low-income earners or the poor had no access to quality healthcare. Being a non-profit and community-owned organization, they provide high-quality primary care, and even preventive services to the population they serve, irrespective of whether they are in the position to pay or not. The high-quality care provided also include an increased access to care, such as the provision of transportation when needed, translation when demanded, even home visitation (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2006). All these are made possible by the stakeholder groups, which include but not limited to the patients themselves, and their families, the community, volunteers, staff – including physicians and the different partners they are involved. Consequently, the currently practiced solution is the low-cost/high-value of services the communities being serviced enjoys.
Without the pressure that these industries are giving to the local fishermen they won't excessively hunt for whales but since they don't really have a choice but to go with the flow of the so called modern life, they have no choice but to make deals and silently do whatever it takes for them to survive. It's sad to see how many cultures have already died or have been forgotten because of the many things that caused many of us to
