These students believe that they are getting the best education, but there are many students who are getting a better education at a school that has the funds to pay for everything their students need. Low-income students are suffering due to the environment they are in at school and they continue to suffer throughout their life due to it. These students will continue to suffer unless something is done about the low-income schools and improve them for the future. Improvement has to come from all areas, not just one aspect of schooling but from all aspects. Although education has improved along with technology many low-income students still suffer from the vast inequalities.
According to The Center on International Education Benchmarking (CIEB), Finland, Japan, and Canada are some of the world’s top performing countries. However, the education system of the United States continues to lag behind that of these three countries and many others. In order to compete more with these countries, one must look more in depth into these education systems and compare the many different factors that are contributing to the success of these countries such as their educational structure, curriculum and assessment, teacher quality, and accountability. The Center on International Education Benchmarking states that the success of Finland’s schools is said to come from the highly-qualified teachers and the high value the Finns place on the teaching field. Finland has created very in depth policies on the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision process of the teaching profession.
A high school diploma and a college degree ensure better jobs and higher income. In recent decades, the importance of literacy skills has become more vital than ever but schools still have many deficiencies. The measures of student performance are on the rise but, many of our youth fall short of graduating high school. Public opinion agrees that changes must be made but have not come to an agreement of what exactly the solution to the problems is. Equal school funding is at the top of my list when it comes to poverty and inequality in the school system.
Education has been historically considered as an equalizer of society in America, allowing the opportunity for even the disadvantaged to reach success. Race was once the strongest factor in determining future achievement, but today Stanford Sociologist, Sean F. Reardon, says income level has become more consequential (Tavernise). President Barack Obama was one of the lucky few able to overcome the obstacles he faced growing up being both African American and underprivileged, but most children are not as lucky (Rampton , Nawaguna). In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, the Lacks family lived in poverty and struggled to perform well in school, resulting in many of them dropping out even before high school (Skloot). The success gap between high and low income students in the U.S. has increased significantly in recent years (McGlynn).
NCLB ensures that parents have important information regarding the schools their children attend and whether they are performing well or not. In addition, under NCLB, such schools that are considered low-performing must use their federal funds to make needed improvements. In the event of a school’s continued poor performance, parents have the option to ensure that their children receive the high-quality education to which they are entitled. One of the major reasons for this controversy is that it is almost impossible to separate standards from assessment of student progress and teacher and school accountability.

Lynn Olson argues that there have been studies that suggest “school-to-work can help address one of the greatest problems in education: motivation.” This makes sense and I believe this to be a very accurate and significant argument. Without motivation students will find it very difficult to get things started and to complete their tasks. This not only happens with academics but in life general. Lynn Olson argues, “A majority of American teenagers in national surveys describe their education as “boring.” I can attest to that. Both in high school, and in college I have had to learn about subjects that I can careless about and because of this the motivation factor was extremely low.
