Everyone has habits that they would like to change or even improve; however, people don’t know how to. The book The Power of Habits, by Charles Duhigg, explains how habits could be changed or improved with the habit loop. Habit loop is a three-step process. The first step is a cue, then a routine and last is a reward. If one of these steps is missing, the habit could not be changed. I had to use the habit loop method to be able to change one of my habits, so I could succeed in my education this semester.
Over time, this loop will become more and more automatic. The cue and reward become intertwined until a powerful sense of anticipation and craving emerges. Eventually, a habit is born. When a habit is born, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. It stops working so it focus on other tasks. So unless you deliberately fight a habit and find new routines, the pattern will unfold automatically. It’s important to understand that habits don’t disappear, but they could be changed. Steven Handel mentioned in his article “Identify Your Habit Loops” the importance of forming a plan to help change unhelpful habit loops. Handel also mentions that if people plan to act in a certain way at a certain time and place, it makes it much more likely that they are going to commit to that new behavior, “which is called implementation

For example, when people are bored, they start doing pointless things. Another example will be when teachers ask if someone has a question or a comment, I would ask all the doubts I had regarding the assignment. I would start my assignment, and if there was a problem while working on it, I would immediately send a message to get help. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. The Natural is a novel written by Bernard Malamud. It is Malamud’s first novel that initially received mixed reactions but afterwards, it was regarded as an outstanding piece of literature. It is a story about Roy Hobbs who after making mistakes in his life, he returns the bribery money and is left with self-hatred for mistakes he has done. The twentieth century was supposed to be peaceful and prosperous, but the man invented The World War; therefore, genocides and starvation appeared. However, there is a being who encourages us to be moral people, and he is God. Bad times are no excuses for bad choices and bad lives. Moral rules and ideals are not designed for good times but for bad times. For example, the laws of a country are most needed when there is corruption and negligence. Bad times are for good people and good people are for bad times; only in a bad world can we become good. Therefore, times of crisis serve us to rise up and fight against them.

A Few Keys to All Success by Jim Muncy, published in 2002 explains that there are 7 universal keys to success that we can relate to everyday life. Discernment, Optimism, Responsibility, Initiative, Perseverance, Purpose, Sacrifice. Each one represents how we grow and teaches us how to have a high quality of life. From reading this book I am confident because I know being normal means being average and what we do can change how we act significantly. Also we can’t let the world hold us back from greatness. Ever since the creation of the golden arches, America has been suffering with one single problem, obesity. Obesity in America is getting worse, for nearly two-thirds of adult Americans are overweight. This obesity epidemic has become a normal since no one practices any type of active lifestyle. Habits are choices that one continues to do repeatedly without actually thinking about them. Habits start with a decision, but they eventually become automatic. One can probably think about things we do every day that we wish we did less of, perhaps like binging Netflix, constantly checking social media, or snacking when not being hungry. When it comes to the topic of addiction, most of us will readily agree that it is a miserable trait to possess. An addiction is a physical and psychological state of being that if not treated correctly could result into harmful wrongdoing. In The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he recounts a story in which a fatigued housewife named Angie Bachmann lost all of her family’s assets, amounting to a million dollars due to a gambling addiction. Every habit has three components: a cue or a trigger of an automatic behavior to start, a routine the behavior itself, and a reward which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future. According to Duhigg, “you cannot extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it” (63). Duhigg suggests that in order to change ones bad habit the “Golden Rule” must be implied. The Golden Rule is a theory of shifting a habit by retaining the old cue and reward, and tries to change only the routine. Duhigg’s answer to the question in the chapter title, “Are we responsible for our habits?” is simply “Yes.” If we have an awareness of our habits, then we are responsible for their consequences. In the case of Angie Bachmann, she should be held accountable for her gambling debts because she was well aware of her own bad habit and did not try to seek for help.
A habit can be many things, some good, some not so good. Everyone has habits that they would like to change and maybe improve upon. I believe the majority of habits I have are good ones but some are not. These bad habits are the ones I will talk about.
