Throughout The Power and the Glory, numerous characters question the integrity and authenticity of the priest doing his job. Instead, he is known as a “whiskey priest”, and someone who failed as a priest, resulting in a child, and poor habits. He is the opposite of what a real priest should be. Some think of the priest as good and others think of him as bad. But despite the priests flaws and well known reputation for being a bad priest, his holiness is shown through his actions and confessions of faith to others. Many times in The Power and the Glory, the priest is asked if he is a martyr which he denies, because he believes that he has committed too many crimes and sins to be called one. Part of the priests thinking is that martyrs and saints …show more content…
Visiting the Yankee and hearing his confession was a huge risk for the priest safety wise, but he couldn’t not visit him (it was a very important task for the priest to complete- that he wanted to complete). Many times the Yankee proclaims to the priest to “beat it” or let him be, but the priest is on a mission and genuinely wants to help the man. The priest tries so hard to convince the Yankee to repent, so that he will not be “damned” after a living a lifetime of being labeled as a murderer, and so that he will end up in purgatory after death. The priest even mentions to the Yankee that God has given him a second chance and that “He may not give you another…” and even that remark does not convince the man (189). While the man is set and does not accompany the priest with his idea, he thanks the priest in a way for trying, and ends up dying moments later, an unsaved man. Yet, even though the priest failed in helping the Yankee repent or confess his sins and crimes before his death, after his note that he wanted a priest, he instead showed that caring for others, prioritizing faith was important. Though the priest was very flawed, so was the Yankee, but the priest risked his life to save someone else, and that showed his true holiness and care for
In these five paragraphs I will be writing about the book “Hotel on the Corner of Sweet and Bitter” written by Jamie Ford and five quotation that important and made up the theme for me. This book gives a feel a lot of different emotions. The first quote was “‘You are Chinese aren’t you,Henry? That’s fine. Be who you are, she said, turning away, a look of disappointment in her eyes. “But I’m an American’’(p. 60). This quote is important because it shows how Keiko believes even if her parents are Japanese she feels more American then Japanese since she barely spoke Japanese.
John Knowles wrote a fantastic novel entitled A Separate Peace. Some important character in the novel were Gene, Finny, Leper, and Brinker. Gene and Finny were best friends; Leper was the outcast; Brinker was the “hub of the class” This was a novel about friendship, betrayal, war, peace, and jealousy. Although Gene and Finny were similar in many ways, they also had numerous differences.
For example, when Padre and Ramsay meet each other for the first time, Blazon morally teaches Dunstan “I cannot make saints, nor can the Pope. We can only recognize saints when the plainest evidence shows them to be saintly”. (165) Therefore, he suggests to Dunstan to find the answer “in psychological truth, not in objective truth” (169) Furthermore, Padre believes Dunstan is “foolish to demand the agreement of the world” (165).
In the dystopian novel of The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil, the theme is Loss of love. Loss of love is both demonstrated inside the novel and as well it is presented in the real world life where real humans live in. Who knew that in a fiction novel it can seem so real as these situations that are happening in the novel were not made up and were real things happening to the Characters. Just like these situations happening in the novel they are actually happening in the real world today. Loss of love occurs in the novel of The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil through three influential characters; Inner Horinters, Phil, and Carol. The fictional representation of loss is similar to real life situations such as Undocumented Immigrants
One view towards the issue of self-sacrifice is that it is a pointless waste of life due to pride. As the date of Proctor’s hanging approaches, he is encouraged by Parris, Danforth and even Reverend Hale to confess to witchcraft, which would thus validate the hanging of the rema...
John Proctor grows to be the hero of the story and his decision regarding pleading guilty to witchcraft and living with that lie; in contrast with not confessing, in which case he would be put to death. His ultimate decision assists Millers’ emphasis on the choices pertaining to betrayal. He disputes internally with himself and eventually decides that to die confident in ...

The Chosen by Chaim Potok is a phenomenal novel about two Jewish boys who live in two very discrepant worlds because of the impressions of their fathers. The Hasidic Rabbi, Reb Saunders wants his son, Danny Saunders, to perdure the family legacy and become a Rabbi. The Salem witch trials were a time period when any individual could be accused of witchcraft for numerous reasons. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller focuses on the deviation of the trials and how the town’s most religious and honest members of the community are tried with witchcraft. John Proctor, the town’s most honest man, is accused of being a witch and must decide if he should confess or not. Proctor’s confession will stop the town from rebelling and uphold the reputations of Deputy Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris. Hale also wishes for Proctor’s confession so he does not have to feel responsible if Proctor were to be hanged for his witchcraft accusations. The confession of Proctor would convince others in the town to confess to their
The martyrs in the document take on the role of mediator between God and man, spreading the Word of God to the masses of people and the relaying to them his holy message, in a sense taking on the role of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Perpetua, one of the martyrs when confronted about her faith by her father retorts, “I am Christian” (para.6). Another martyr, Felicity, confidently defends her faith and proclaims it openly by stating, “Stand fast in the faith, and love you all one another; and be not offended because of our passion” (para.20). This statement portrays to the reader the ...
Link – In Miller’s play, the character of John Proctor is tested. Eventually he decides to sacrifice his life, rather than betray his beliefs.
The sacrifice of a man’s honor can save his family and their reputation. A man’s ultimate sacrifice would be losing his life for his family. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, a hero named John Proctor redeems himself after having brought distress and shame to his marriage. He defies higher authority in the town of Salem and in doing so; it leads to his demise. John Proctor is a hero because he sacrificed his life for his and his family’s honor.
In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, John Proctor, a proud and frustrated farmer of Salem, chooses to die rather than to give a false confession to witchcraft. Many might view this act as that of a selfless martyr; on the other hand, it can more readily be seen as the height of human stupidity in the face of vanity and pride.
In the saying of “Character is what you are in the dark” by Dwight Lyman Moody, can meaning many different things. One being, “you are most yourself when no one is watching”, another one also being, “dark and troubled times bring out a person's true nature”, and “your true nature is on the inside”. This quote can or cannot apply to the play of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare.
He really does not get any closer to redemption by doing this, although it may ease part of his emotional burden, his spiritual failings remain.
