Each era has left its mark on society and each has created traditions for present and future generations to adopt. The current generation’s gift to the future is the development of technology. It has been a revolutionary discovery and advancement that has created a new way of life. It has destroyed the past and the past’s remains struggle to survive. In the past, a home where was everyone gathered to stay connected; however, as a result of technology’s impact, a home is where people disconnect from their own family to connect with others. If one does adopt the values of technology, he/she will be left behind. In the poem, “The Philosophy of Wood”, by Pablo Saborio, the destruction of the narrator’s furniture demonstrates that his house is no longer a nurturing home. Everyone has a different perspective. For ideas to come to fruition, one experiences the growing pain and the journey can be the most amazing part. In the poem, the chair “wants to remove its painfully ingrown nails” (15-16); however, “[p]aradoxically, they keep it alive in form, in function” (15-18). Technology has ruined family bonding, yet has also kept families connected through technological communications. The family world would fall apart without access to technology (communication, sharing, etc.) similar to how the chair would fall apart without its nails. It may be painful and technology can cause issues, but it is present for a reason. While one does not experience physical interaction with his/her family anymore, the social interaction compensates for it. Nails can cause separations in the wood, like rifts in the family dynamic, but can also keep the structure together.
