Peace is a major ideal in christianity as this religion greatly revolves around peace and about bringing it to others, while although Christianity has caused conflicts in the past it does not deter from what Christianity's main ideal is about, spreading the word of God through peace. The word peace is hard to define as the word’s definition can change depending on it’s use and by who is using it, but commonly used definitions of peace used throughout would be “tranquility, harmony, or security” as these definitions can give a broader meaning to the word and covering a lot of bases. Christian ideals of peace can be found in the Just-War theory, the approach taken towards Pax Christi from Christianity and Christian Pacifism are some examples …show more content…
This catholic peace movement aims to be a force of peace for Catholics within the churches and communities who are looking to bring peace and unity to a divided world. The movement has 3 main focuses on how they act spirituality, study and action, Spirituality being the religious theme of the movement, study being the research they do on their issues and publish them, and action being the event of carrying a movement to affirm one of their issues. While keeping true to these three the Australian section of Pax Christi gives main priority to education and research, conferences, grassroots activities, spiritual and theological reflections. Referring to the quote by Martin Luther King Jr. to the quote the movement focuses on human rights, human security, disarmament and demilitarization, world order and peace, this is relatable to the quote as these objectives have the aim of bringing peace to others who have experienced conflict and as well as actively sought to remove the possibilities of more conflicts occurring, and they do this as peacefully as possible. An example of their efforts in keeping the peace is their negotiations with the UN to abolish nuclear weapons which leads to a conference in 2017 between 9 states to prohibit nuclear weapons through a legally binding contract, a great act in …show more content…
While pacifism within Christianity is no longer as a large priority in modern Christianity the pacifist stance is still quite large among Christians. The Christian Church greatly encourages avoiding conflict when possible and should conflict ensue they do it as morally and ethically justifiable as possible, this can apply to them whether it be a small fight or a large scale battle/war. In the New Testament peace is considered to be one of the foundational element of Christian communities, and the commandment contained in the bible “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” - Mark 12:31 and as such they firmly hold onto their pacifist stance, initially refusing to participate in any form of military service or warfare but did eventually compromise to contribute towards non-combatant roles in the military and warfare. An example of Christian Pacifism contributing to peace would be the Religious Pacifist group “Quakers” who believed that war and conflict are against God’s wishes and so their group are dedicated to pacifism, and a have a controversial view which sees that using forces creates more problems than it solves which gets them accused of being willing to give to evil
This takes us to the concept of just war. Aristotle saw just war as a means to a higher goal. You don't just fight the war to win the war there needs to be a purpose to fighting the war. He goes on to tell us how others view just war. The Romans said war was just only when conducted by the state, and only accompanied by a declaration of hostilities, meaning war had to be declared on someone. Rebellions and revolutions were not considered just wars. The Japanese did not define when war was just or proper. Early Christians rejected war; this came from the effort to be more Christ like, the Golden Rule, due unto others as you would have them do to you. Later the Christians could no longer be pacifists; they were going to have to go to war sometime after Constantine became emperor and declared Christianity as the main religion of the time.

Christians refuse to fight at war, they can still be part of war in a
The theory of Just War can be found back over centuries to the philosophy of St. Augustine and beyond. Augustine was one of the first important figures to be challenged by the concerns raised by justified warfare. Christianity, despite significant prosecution, grew out of the Roman Empire, which was Pagan. The evolving Christianity was fundamentally pacifist, giving rise to the refusal of Christians to fight in the Roman army; violence was against Jesus’ teaching to turn the other cheek, never seek revenge, not to defend themselves and to forgive seventy times seven. Similarly, they could not justify fighting for a pagan empire, and since initially, they were expecting Jesus to return soon, warfare was not considered an important priority. However, when Emperor Constantine became Christian, he made Christianity the official religion of the empire. Up until this point, Christianity remained pacifist. This was the problem that Augustine was faced with; justifying warfare for a Christian empire.
Many people believe that today’s Christians are too sheltered and oblivious to the real world around them. When asked, many outsiders compared today’s Christians to “The Titanic - a ship about to sink, but unaware of its fate” or “a hobby that diverts people’s attention” (Kinnaman 120). It is important Christians to not just stay secluded in one group (church group), but to be talking to others (outsiders) so we are aware of the problems and thing that are going on in the world around us. As Christians we are called to be disciples of Jesus by reaching out to those in need, praying for those around us, and calling people to become the church. In “Unchristian” David Kinnaman outlines three main things we as Christians should include in our lives: accepting responsibility, not being fearful, helping the desperate, being prepared, and keeping a balance.
Therefore, this Christian philosophy advocates for war while safeguarding the rights of its citizens and justice, as well as the innocent and moral values. The “Just War Theory” has its strength and weakness. The strength is that it uses God with the evidence from the Bible for what it advocates. For
Extreme pacifists have a strict discipline they follow that does not condone war for any reason and believes and advocates peace. Extreme pacifists live a way of life that is strict and adherent to these guidelines to which causes its followers to not be able to participate in many functions or organizations that can result or advocate violence. I don’t necessarily agree with this view and would not find it realistic enough to be able to apply it in our society today. It’s an admirable quality to which extreme pacifists religiously hold and abide by but it appears to me to be to idealistic and not easily attainable in our society, at least that’s the way I see it. The concept of “just war” began with Augustine, and in his own way to rationalize and clarify what he believed outlined a war to be considered just. Augustine was able to outline and categorize just war into jus in bellum, “the necessary …conditions for justifying engagement in war” and jus in bello “the necessary conditions for conducting war in a just manner.” The final stage, jus pos bellum, “…seeks to regulate the ending of wars, and to ease the transition from war back to peace.”
On the other hand, Christianity believed that nonviolence led to justice, and justice led to peace. The Roman Ideology was simply saying that without winning against violence, there was going to be no peace. “There will be peace on earth, said Roman ideology when all is quiet and orderly.” The exact opposite was Christianity’s belief; peace was only able to come from nonviolence. “There will be peace on earth, said Christianity, when all is fair and just.” If anyone had to choose between violence and nonviolence, they would most likely choose nonviolence. It was less harmful, calmer, and more positive than violence, attracting much more attention than other
Abolishing War? An appeal to Christian Leaders and Theologians is on the pro side of the abolishing war argument. The document argues that we need to find a non-violent alternative to war. It uses the “teaching of Jesus Christ which summons Christians to renounce war and to seek with the wider and religious and human communities to develop alternatives to protect the innocent, to restrain, to restrain aggressors and to overcome injustice”. Should wars can be avoided, the peace is always a satisfactory result. Some ancient but enlightening religious pacifism upheld the peace under any circumstance. According to the New Testament, it’s advocated to “love” your “enemies” so that you can be decent “peacemakers”; and
Not being pacifist has led to political support and social systems that support war. Going against pacifism has led to military protection for the United States. Every citizen in the United States has the duty to protect their citizens. It does not matter that pacifist are motivated by respecting the human life and a love of peace. Pacifist refuse to participate in war but people who are failing out to carry out important obligation. The United States was founded upon war. In 1771 people believed in their individual freedom, Britain then came along and suppressed the colonist. The colonist tried a peaceful protest against Britain but resulted in a historical event called The Boston Massacre. Five colonist died in the event and none had any sort of weapon in their hand. The colonist tried being pacifist for years but it led them nowhere. The colonist understood the only option they had was to fight for their freedom and they did. It resulted in a major victory for them and America was born.
The word peace is mentioned over ninety time is the New Testament and in other passages the quest for peace is address without actually using the term. In the New Testament Jesus’ life is the perfect model for living in peace. To have a close relationship with Jesus and his teachings will enable the adherent to experience this peace. For Christians achieving inner peace is following the example and teachings of Jesus. Groups within Christianity will have methods to follow Jesus’ example. Most normally include the use of prayer, the reading of scripture, participation in the wider community, service to others and Sunday worship. Maintaining a steady balance between service and prayer is pivotal for Christians in finding inner peace. Service ...
In Christianity, the emphasis is placed on love of God rather than on obeying his will. People must believe that God is merciful and loves them as well. As a reflection of God’s love, people must also love other people (and the whole humanity in general) and forgive their enemies.
What is Christianity all about? What are the basic beliefs of Christianity and how did it begin? According to (AllAboutReligion, 2010),” Christianity began about 2000 years ago in Judea, [presently known today as Israel] with Jesus Christ and His faithful group of disciples”. This paper will address the viewpoint of the Christian faith and its outcome. The central message of Christianity is based upon the teachings of Jesus and his promises. Christianity teaches that there is merely one God in all existence and that God created the universe. It also teaches that Jesus is the only way to be set free from the coming judgment of God and that Jesus desires his values and his standards to abound. Moreover, Christianity is the only religion that offers a savior. Religion has been in every culture since the beginning of human society and there are many religions competing for the heart of humanity throughout the world at large. The following characterizations are based on the Christian faith: redemption, covenant and grace. Although Christianity is a matter of choice for the human race, what type of influence did it have on the China, Africa, and Rome inhabitants?
Pacifism covers an array of views and there are many subcategories of pacifism, some of which I will cover, but the main definition of the word pacifism is the opposition to war and/or violence. Perhaps the most famous use of the word pacifism is found in the “Sermon on the Mount”, where Jesus claims the “peacemakers” are blessed. In this passage, the Greek word eirenopoios is translated into Latin as pacifici, which means those who work for peace. One common and simple argument for pacifism among religious groups or god fearing people is the argument that god’s revealed words says, through the bible, “Thou shalt not kill.”
