S.E. Hinton has a unique style different from others. Writing The Outsiders, she uses a range of techniques for very specific purposes. S.E. Hinton style of writing shows suspense to readers. Using many techniques to create her style, Hinton creates many extremities in the story. Her writing style shows how teenagers interact with one another back in the 1980s, and the character’s identity, which is one big theme in The Outsiders. Hinton’s use of this theme characterizes how people act, think, and do. By looking at techniques, suspense, and identity, one can see that the book The Outsiders, is liked by many because of Hinton’s style. S.E. Hinton uses different techniques to keep readers from being bored. Foreshadowing, the technique in which authors help readers by giving them clues in the text, is an effective way to catch reader’s attention. For example, the story is told in the past tense yet, sometimes the use of that tense is more significant than others. Pony’s writing his memories into a book of the tragic events that he was recently a part of. Layers and layers of suspense drive forward the novel's action. For example, the suspense started after Johnny and Ponyboy were jumped by Socs, “I killed him,’[Johnny] said slowly, ‘I killed that boy.’ Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still.” (56). After killing the Soc, Johnny and Ponyboy needed to flee from the police. Suspense is with Pony and Johnny during that time. When Johnny and Ponyboy arrive at the church, Ponyboy thought “[the] church gave me a kind of creepy feeling” (67).
