There are many similarities throughout the book and the movie. While reading the book and observing the movie, The Outsiders in the beginning they both started with the same line “ When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the moviehouse, I only had two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.”(Hinton p.1) When Ponyboy and Johnny first met Cherry at the movies, the Socs found out that she was hanging out with the Greasers they were going to fight and Cherry told them that she didn’t like fights against anyone. While Ponyboy was coming home from the movies the Socs were following him but the color of the mustang the Socs were driving was red, in the book it was blue. Further on the Socs jumped Ponyboy and they tackled him to the ground and cut his neck, but really he got cut on the head. It came to mind that after the movie, Two-bit realized that Cherry and Marcia did not have a ride home. So they walk to Two-bit’s house to get the car. As they walk, Ponyboy and Cherry talk about the differences between Socs and greasers and how they act and how poor or rich they are. Later on Ponyboy finds himself talking to Cherry about Sodapops old horse Mickey Mouse. Then Ponyboy realizes that two different worlds we live in are not so different after all because we look at the same sunset everyday. Until Marcia spots a blue mustang that belongs to the socs. Both of these books are centered around three young boys going through many trials and tribulations throughout their young adult life. All six of these boys have lost their parents in tragic accidents; that ended up changing the way these boys grew up and the path that they later chose. The book The Outsiders is surrounding three boys by the names of Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry. Darry who is the oldest of the three boys begins to take on responsibility of taking care of his three younger brothers. These boys all end up taking a bad path in life, which resulted in joining a gain and the gain, became their family, somewhat of a filler for what they have lost in their real families home.
In chapter one we are introduced to our narrator, Ponyboy. Ponyboy is raised by his two older brothers Darry and Soda. They’re all apart of a gang called the “greasers” which is joined by Dally, Johnny, Two-bit, and Steve. There is another group called “ socs” which stands for socials, and everyone in that group is very wealthy. One day Ponyboy got jumped by a socs group, but luckily Darry was there to help before anything too serious happened. The first element of literature is characterization. Ponyboy is a keen observer, trying to make sense of the complexities of those around him. At the beginning of the story, he stops and spends several pages giving us brief character description on Steve, Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny. This is also known as direct characterization. He tells us that Steve is "cocky and smart" ( Hinton 9). Two-Bit can 't stop joking around and goes to school for "kicks" (Hinton 10) rather than to learn. Dallas, he says, is "tougher, colder, meaner" ( Hinton 10) than the rest of them.

Which is better: book or movie? The age-old debate. But which is better? S.E Hinton's, 'The Outsiders' book is far superior to Francis F. Coppola's motion-picture film portrayal of the book in 1983. You might remember it from the popular quote, "Stay Gold". Today it is mostly read in middle school classrooms. The Outsiders was published by S.E Hinton in 1967 when she was a teenager. The main focus throughout the story is the feud between two gangs: The Socials (Socs) and the Greasers. "We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder too". The whole book is written in Ponyboy Curtis's point of view. So, we are hearing the story through a Greaser's perspective. It is often difficult to make a connection with a character over the big screen. You miss out on scenes that did not make it into the movie, some that were are not emphasized like they should have been, and some characters were portrayed wrongly.
In the novel, Dallas Winston was said to have very bright blonde hair. Another difference is that the socs lived on the west side and the greasers lived on the east side of town. Also, Ponyboy goes into detail Soda, his girlfriend Sandy and his old horse Mickey (SparkNotes). When Pony comes home after curfew, Darry slaps him which leads to Pony running away. The murder was focused on a lot as it showed how Soda and Ponyboy could be put in a boy’s home. This was a big deal because the Curtis family would be separated. Another difference is that in the book, when Ponyboy and Johnny run away to the countryside, they ask a farmer for directions to Jay Mountain. When the cops are running after Dally, he calls Pony’s house and says that he is not hurt. After all this, Pony gets sick and after he recovered, he goes to court to testify information on the murder. The book closes up with the whole book being a report to Pony’s English teacher in order to raise his grade. The movie, The Outsiders, starts with the Curtis parents on their weekly, Saturday evening drive to the baking store to buy some ingredients for their boys’ favorite Sunday morning, breakfast treat: chocolate cake. The Curtis boys love their chocolate cake for Sunday breakfast not only because they love it, but also because they appreciate how hard their parents have to work to save the monies necessary for the morsels that put smiles on their faces!
Ponyboy has a dispute with his brother Darry and ends up running away to the park with Johnnycake. There, Ponyboy and Johnnycake get into a fight with Randy, Bob, and three other members of the Socs. The Socs try to down Ponyboy, so Johnnycake stabs Bob with a knife and ends up killing him. Ponyboy and Johnnycake run to a party where they meet up with Dallas, one of their close friends. He gives them a gun, money, and tells them to get a train out of town to an abandoned church. They are told to stay there until Dallas comes to get them.
Ponyboy was walking home from the theaters and he got jumped. The socs surrounded him and it was an unfair fight for Ponyboy. The Greasers carry around knives to protect themselves. “ I had seen Johnny after four socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty.” (4). This shows that the Greasers have to be careful and always be on the lookout for socs so they don't get jumped.
West Side Story is a book about two gangs living in a large city. The Outsiders is a book with the same concept, two gangs that are archrivals. Even though two different authors wrote these books during two different time periods, they have the same story line. These books are realistic, because gang rivalry is still going on today. They are different, since they were written separately. Also, both these books have different problems between the main characters. Still, West Side Story and The Outsiders have many similarities.
I read the book The Outsiders and watched the movie the West Side Story, they had many similarities but they also had their differences. I enjoyed both the book and the movie they were very well written. I will tell compare and contrast the book and the movie.

The movie shows fans a visual representation of the book, The Outsiders. The Outsiders book is different from the movie because the book shows Ponyboy’s thoughts, the movie doesn’t show much of what happens to Ponyboy after Dally’s death, and doesn’t show movie-watchers much of Johnny’s backstory.
