Information Technology has come a long way over the past few decades. The way information is passed and received now just as fast as a blink of an eye in some cases. The computer and the internet is now the new social gathering place for the world. This new change in the world has affected everyone including the children born in this new age. From a social stand point it has affected the way an entire generation communicates with one another. Educationally it has made it somewhat easier for teacher and other school district staff member to organize things like grade, attendance, and disciplinary notices. On a professional level computers and the internet have affected the work place in a major way, some place don’t have paper anything but checks now. Being one of the children born this new age of Information Technology, I can say this new age of computers and internets has drastically assisted me and will continue to in my near future.
Being a child of the 90’s I can say socially computers and the internet has affected me in the past and will continue to affect me in many ways. I can’t imagine life without a computer it does seem possible. Since I started school back in ‘97 there was always at least one computer in my classroom. Honestly I remember being on the internet constantly since the fourth grade. As I got older the internet became more accessible and more common. By the time I was in middle school MySpace changed the way my generation looked at being social. The new place to be was on the internet on MySpace. Everyone was there form your favorite singers to your favorite actor even parents in some cases. By the time I hit high school Facebook had taken the world by storm. It is plain to see that this new world we live in would be nothing without the internet, and the internet would be nothing without the computer. I can honestly say I am extremely proud to be born in this new age of information. Most (not all) older people truly believe we are going through all of the same things as them. That has to be one of the biggest lies ever told. No two generations have all the same problems. Which is why I say you will have an harder time trying to figure out how the internet and computer won’t be in your future.
The internet is no longer just a source for research, as Cascio has said “ the digital systems we rely upon become faster, more sophisticated, and capable too” (Cascio). What he means by this is that we can rely more on technology to help us because it’s developing to become efficient to our daily needs. For example, there are tasks we can now complete on the internet that used to require plenty of time. Things like going to pay rent, purchasing groceries, or going to the bank are all things that can now be done online due to the faster, more capable power of the internet. Once time consuming or complex tasks are now simple to complete with just a few clicks. This is a beneficial concept to those who have busy schedules, have difficulties with transportation, disabilities that don’t allow them to maneuver much, or anyone who just doesn't have the time, patients, or ability to stand in long, never-ending waiting lines. According to the previously mentioned study done by Nanjing University of Science and Technology with the University of South Australia “elderly people are increasingly using mobile devices to conduct online banking, find jobs, access medical help, and obtain entertainment information” (Ma). With all the technology today, the Internet is still off-limits to certain people. Everyone does not own a computer and because of this, everyone is not computer literate. Mostly middle and upper class people have their own laptops, or computers, and are able to pay for Internet service. Other people, like student's who use their schools computers or people who go to libraries, are forced to use whatever equipment is available, which is, in most cases, not top of the line and sometimes may or may not have the Internet. Soon this world will be computer-based and if you do not have your own computer or at least access to one, you will be behind. The Internet is an important part of computers considering the many uses it offers.
This makes kids forget how to socialize with one another and not know how to carry on a conversation. Along with socialization becoming obsolete, technology causes addiction, and the replacement of jobs throughout America. The reasons why technology is impacting society in a negative way is how people are forgetting how to socialize and becoming antisocial, automatics are taking the place of jobs for humans, and the internet is making millions addicted along with more mental health problems.
The major technology change that has had the greatest impact on the quality of my life is the spread of uses for the Internet. The wide range of uses for the internet has extremely benefited my life. I use the Internet to keep in touch with my family from College and with my brother who is in the Air Force in Georgia. I also use the Internet to talk to my long-distance boyfriend so my phone bill doesn't get too large. I also use the Internet in a highly educational way. Not only can I take my college courses online (which is much better for me because I teach myself much better than a professor or teacher can teach me), but it can teach me about anything else I would like to know.
I remember the first time I sat on a computer; it was an IBM with a windows 98 installed. We didn’t have Internet connection at the time, and we mainly used our computer for work. The Internet has been around for almost half a century, it has helped us humans communicate easier, get around the world accessibly and exchange goods and services effortlessly. The Internet helped us facilitate a lot of tasks; in the past we had to do a lot of work to get something we needed. Nowadays all of what we can possibly want can be done with a click of a button.
