Academic cheating is, and has always been, a prominent problem in classroom education. Of the many issues that school systems around the country face, cheating is by far the most deeply ingrained and detrimental issue. Cheating itself comes in many forms, including peer-to-peer cheating, sneaking in information, finding answers from outside sources, plagiarism, and more. New access to the internet and other forms of communication have only made this issue more noticeable in recent years. In fact, cheating is on the rise; more students cheat in the current education system than that have in the past (Jones). Thus, negative effects of cheating have been on the rise as well. Unfortunately, these effects create both social and academic problems that the student will face in the future. Current solutions appear to be insufficient or ineffective. The honor code is the most prevalent solution right now, though this system only works to the extent that a student is willing to abide by the code. Studies on cheating gained more attention in the early 1900s and have only become more popular since. Most of these studies focused on the causes of cheating, particularly in high school and college. Early researchers believed that cheating was a problem of ethics that could be fixed with an honor code (Joynes). New studies, however, found that cheating was a much harder and complex problem to solve. As years passed, cheating was revealed to be about more than a skewed sense of morality as the first studies indicated. Cheating was also found to be much more prevalent than previously thought. Later studies found that cheating was found on both ends of the academic spectrum, both ends of the economic spectrum, and through every gender, race, and nationality (McCabe & Trevino) (Schab). Cost-benefit analysis is a systematic process for calculating and analyzing both the cost and benefit and then calculating which action is best for one to be involve in, actions such as; an activity, an decision, or an government policy and figuring out the benefits and costs of the project. One has to determine if the choice one is making is sound and that they would benefit from it rather than receiving zero gratification out of it. The cost of cheating in an University is that one will be on disciplinary probation, suspension, dismissal from Winthrop, and etc. Cheating is like a major crime in college. There are a few benefits from cheating include assuring one a good grade, with little work/studying required. However, the consequences of cheating and getting caught by a professor overweight any benefits that one might think cheating may have.
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.

If there are no consequences for wrongdoings, the students who are cheating might feel as if it is acceptable to continue cheating. There is a constant increasing amount of students cheat who don’t face disciplinary actions. In my PLTW class this and last year, the amount of cheating and “collaborating” is ridiculously excessive. There are only a handful of students that do not copy each other's documents during class and after school. While this is not a serious offense, unlike a quiz or test would be, it is still considered cheating. The teachers must know what is going on for it happens far too often; however, nothing is ever done. While the teachers are somewhat at fault, the honor code itself is responsible for situations like this. The “Academic Dishonesty” section in Bartlett’s student handbook acknowledges but does not specify any punishments. The ambiguity of the honor code itself does not aid in the reduction of cheating. If the honor code does not provide any specifications of punishments or even degrees of cheating, the range of issues that can arise is endless. Students and teachers alike are not able to distinguish between what is cheating and what is not, leading to chaos. Pressures from society to obtain a successful career require achieving an education in most cases. In today's economy having a thriving career could depend on our educational background as part of the ingredient to fuel our lifestyles. Students attending high school or college can relate to the pressures of sustaining adequate grades. Students who are overwhelmed with trying to maintain higher GPA standards push the academic barriers using technology to cheat. Our society is more advanced with technology such as computers, cell phones, text message systems, as well as various other electronic devices that could provide the avenue for a desperate student seeking a way to cheat in order to receive a higher GPA score. According to Ad Council (1999),"Grades, rather than education, have become the major focus of many students" (Ad Council, 1999). For those students in high school maintaining high GPA's could equal college scholarship programs needed to attend college. Students with peer pressures as well as pressures from parents to achieve higher grades could thrust students who are not motivated to study, to resort to cheating as an easy solution to an unethical problem. This research paper will discuss ways in which students are using technology to cheat. Other aspects of this paper will include statistics on academic cheating as well as ways instructors are catching students cheating. The pros and cons after using cheating detection programs as well as statistics that show significant changes after using the detection programs will also be discussed.

Everyone has cheated on something at some point in their life, whether it is in a game, on a test, or in a relationship, everyone has done it. Cheating is anything that involves breaking a rule, or getting an unfair advantage. Schools are one of the most popular places people cheat. Many people down play cheating and use excuses like, “He shouldn’t have let me see his paper,” or, “I am just using my resources wisely.” But, what causes people to cheat? Students cheat in school because of laziness, high standards or pressure to do well, and misunderstanding.

Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
