In a small close-knit town of people of course there will be gossip so therefore, news gets around pretty quick. In "The Ministers Black Veil", Mr. Hooper decided to start wearing a black veil which may represent darkness, sin, and hiding. Ever since this, people of the town were getting frightened and quite confused as to why he is wearing it. I believe he started doing this out of shame, guilt, and to get all who seen him to become aware of their own sin. This impacted the people in many ways. In this story, appearances matter big time. When Mr. Hooper arrived late to his church service wearing the black veil, his entire congregation was concerned. I would be concerned too if my pastor arrived with a black veil upon his face. With Mr. Hooper's appearance change it caused many to feel uncomfortable and leave out of the service. I believe it is his only half of his plan with the black veil to have people get uncomfortable when stumbling or to gaze upon him. A sign of mystery, quietness, and mere darkness that may wake up some from their questions and curiosity, being that Mr. Hooper; a preacher man, has an effect in the town already. …show more content…

Moreover, the veil continues to distract the congregation from religion and morality. Dismissing Hooper’s behavior as insane, the physician shows some signs of sympathizing with it, noting that all humans are afraid of themselves and all are and were once sinners. The physician’s insight also suggests a little further which is that Mr. Hooper may wear the veil to suggest exactly what the physician is noting, that all people are sinners, and that one of the reasons people are afraid of the veil is that they don’t want to face this meaning of the veil.
