Being unique and not fitting the norm cause humanity to condemn those people. Humanity doesn’t want people to be different. Mr. Hooper doesn’t fit the norm causing humanity to separate from him. In The Minister's Black Veil Hawthorne suggests that humanity condemns people who don’t fit the norm. Mr. Hooper's differences illustrate that because he didn’t fit the norm, he became isolated from humanity and was on his own. Elizabeth, who was Mr.Hopper’s fiancée, is trying to get him to remove his veil and has tried for a while when he responds with “NEVER! It cannot be!” (Paragraph 41 Hawthorne) and so Elizabeth says goodbye to Mr. Hooper and never comes back to him. Hooper’s differences Isolate him from humanity because people are starting to gossip about his different to each other. Mr.Hooper has just started to wear his black veil and people are talking about it. Then, before serves “a rumor of some unaccountable phenomenon had preceded Mr.Hooper into the meeting house and set all the congregation astir”(Paragraph 10 Hawthorne). As he walks into the Milford meeting-house everyone is turning trying to get a look at Mr.Hooper’s black veil and talking to their friends about it. Mr.Hooper’s black veil is new to everyone and that is all they are talking about are his’ difference from everyone else. The people in the community don’t want to face him about the veil; however, that is mostly all that the community has to talk about. Therefore Mr. Hooper starts to become isolated from Humanity because he has nothing to talk about with the other people. Then Mr. Hooper wore his black veil to a wedding, which goes against the norm and “supplied a topic for discussion between acquaintances meeting in the street, and good women gossiping at their windows” (Paragraph 23 Hawthorne). At this point, the topic of discussion between two people is Mr. Hooper’s veil but the people of the community still didn’t want to face him about it, leaving him in the dark, Humanity was condemning him because of his
