The Maze Runner is a 2014 mystery/science fiction film that can be viewed from an archetypal perspective. An archetype can be described as a pattern that can and is copied and recurring symbols or characters. The concept of archetypes came from Carl Jung a psychiatrist who believed that all cultures use archetypes to build stories without communicating to each other about them. Two groups of archetypes are the character and symbolic archetypes. The film The Maze Runner should be analyzed through an archetypal perspective because it has character and symbolic archetypes. Alby was the first one sent into The Glade so he is like the father to everyone who’s been around the longest and knows the most about The Glade and The Maze. When Thomas was sent from the cage that sends in the “Greenies,” (new members who are sent into the maze,) and thrown into the slammer Alby was the one to get him out and show him around. He also made the rules and assigned everyone jobs. But, he ended up dying because he was already ill and ended up sacrificing his life for the safety of the others. Therefore, everyone looked up to him because he knew what to do when to do it, and how to do it. Alby was the smartest one when it came to The Glade and The Maze. Furthermore, the evil figure with an ultimately good heart is the mean person who has the potential to be good. This person would be represented by Gally. Innate wisdom vs educated stupidity is when characters exhibit wisdom and understanding of situations instinctively as opposed to those in charge. This can be interpreted when Thomas and Minho when it comes to the maze. Thomas knows about the maze, but still makes dumb decisions as could be seen when he ran in after Minho and Alby when they didn't make it out the maze as the doors closed but still ends up being the reason they survive. Then, Minho has the innate wisdom when it comes to the maze because he knows the maze backward and forwards. He also knows the number position the maze is going to be in each day and has the whole maze mapped out with sticks. This shows how even though Minho new everything the maze Thomas is still the reason they got out. Therefore, even though Minho had the most wisdom Thomas had the most wisdom in that situation because he was the actual reason why they survived. In addition, there is also the magic weapon. The magic weapon is the object or thing needed to complete the quest. Once they got to the end of the maze the only way to open it was with a key. With the key, they could open the doors to where the grievers where during the day then they needed a code.
