This quote found in the Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding is one of the reasons why the Nobel Literature Prize was awarded to him in 1983. He won the Nobel prize for not only writing many successful selling books, such as, Lord of the Flies and Rites of Passage, but in the words of the Nobel committee, he won because “for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today". Tolkien and E.B. White were likely candidates for the Nobel Literature Prize because of their famous books, The Lord of the Rings and Charlotte Web, but William Golding possessed one trait which complemented his writing and gave him the edge. He had experience in themes he was writing about, he became an English and Philosophy teacher in 1935 and joined the Royal Navy in 1940. These experiences showed him first hand how civilization can break down and primal instincts can appear when most needed. In reference to this he saw men in his war squad kill other men, while he was enrolled in the Royal Navy. Statistically, about 7 to 8 percent of the population experiences Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and trauma happens in close to everybody. Trauma in simple terms is a scary or shocking event that you cannot forget, William Golding experienced war and most likely he used some experiences from war to inspire one of his most famous books, Lord of the Flies. In the book the boys hunt a sow or a pig and put the head of the pig on a two-sided spear and stick it into the ground. One of the boys, Simon, approaches the head and starts to talk to it, the sow head responds in his head with the voice of the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies represents the death and decay of the island. William Golding experience made his books best sellers, but his story behind his books made him a Nobel Literature Prize
