Role of Setting in “The Lady with the Dog” Setting is defined as the time and place and the social environment or milieu of a story. The setting of a piece of literature has a variety of different functions, making it an extremely important role in literature. Without it, the characters, the theme, the situation, and many other parts of literature would be difficult to understand. Also, a narrator would have a hard time establishing the mood in a story if no setting was applied in the work. It is winter time and “in the morning it was still dark when the children were having breakfast and getting ready for school” , when Dmitri returns to Moscow (Chekhov 171). The cold, dark setting creates a depressed mood, unlike the mood when the two were in Yalta. This glum mood prompts Dmitri to begin to long for his secret mistress, Anna. “When he shut his eyes he saw her as though she were living before him, and she seemed to him lovelier, younger, tenderer than she was” (Chekhov 172). Realizing something was different about his relationship with Anna from the previous women he had cheated on his wife with, he decides to go find her. This is when he understands that he loves Anna. Had Dmitri not missed the woman in the lonesome winter months, he might have not gone to look for her and the two may have never see each other again. The setting of “The Lady with the dog” played a very important role in the story. Without it, the story would not have finished how it had. It created a romantic mood in Yalta that prompted the Dmitri and Anna to begin their passionate relationship. In Moscow, the setting created a lonely, gloomy mood that made the man miss Anna so badly that he had to go find her in her city she lived in. The term setting refers to the time and place of a story or play. There are four different settings in this book. It is like this because the book is divided into four different sections. The four sections are Bessie, The School, The Arena, and The Mountains. All of these sections have totally different settings.

Furthermore, “The settings [the playwrights] describe are symbols that give the plays their meaning” (Barnet, Cain 210). Even a bare stage will contribute to the symbolism and theme presented on the stage. Beyond killing herself though, this last scene symbolizes the idea that Anna finally got to a state in which she would face her judgement, and because of this, the reader did not have to ascribe her to any kind of punishment, as God himself is the one to determine what is to happen to her from this point onward. Even though she is the only one who faces a wrath following her wrongdoing, Tolstoy still hinted a sort of fondness towards the character of Anna, as she was simply a victim of a dead marriage. Under any other circumstance, if she would not have been married, her story would have been accepted as a love story. But since she was married, she should have accepted the unhappiness of her marriage, as to some extent or another, it seems to be a thread within the familial structure (as depicted in the opening line of the novel). Setting is one of many ways a writer can show emotion as well as a plethora of other emotions or experiences in a story. Amy Tan, the author of “A Pair of Tickets”, uses setting to create the feelings being in a mysterious land and being at home at the same time. Setting creates a greater understanding of the struggles that the characters have/are going through during the story. In “A Pair of Tickets,” setting creates the following introspective elements for the characters: a greater understanding to each characters wisdom, reveals the struggles of each characters and shows each characters true age.

“The Lady with the Pet Dog” exhibits Anton Chekhov’s to convey such a powerful message in a minimal amount of words. He uses the element of color to show the emotions as well as changing feelings of the main characters, Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna, and the contrast of them being apart to them being together. For example, when Anna leaves and they are apart, Dmitri seems to live in a world of grey. As he begins to age, his hair begins to turn grey, and he is usually sporting a grey suit. Yalta is where they met, and it is described as a romantic spot filled with color and vibrancy and freedom, like when Chekhov writes “the water was of a soft warm lilac hue, and there was a golden streak from the moon upon it.”
In the story of “The Lady or the Tiger” there is a king that is semi-barbaric. The king has a daughter and she is a little barbaric herself and because they are a barbaric family they have a way of taking care of crime. They will have a lady and a tiger in two doors and if someone commits a crime or if the king doesn't like the person then the person will be put in the dome and will have to chose one of the doors. If they pick the door with the tiger in it that means that they are guilty of their crime and they will be eaten by the tiger and if they choose the door with the lady then it will mean that they get out scoot free. But there is a catch to it if they choose the lady then they will have to marry the lady even if they have a wife and family.

Glaspell uses symbolic objects to help the audience get a better understanding for the characters. The three symbolizes used are a birdcage, a bird, and rope.
It seems as though Pyotr and Alexeich both represent different aspects of Chekhov’s father, and Chekhov himself is Anna. Chekov’s father was aloof from his family and came from a lower class background; like Modest Alexeich, Chekhov’s father also fawned at the feet of his social superiors. Chekhov, in contrast, was an unconventional boy. He eventually broke from his family’s lower class position and became a doctor; however, throughout his school and career he performed additional odd jobs to earn money he could send to his father. Also like Anna, Chekhov loved to be with people (Payne xiii, xvii-xxi). Comparing the two, then, it would seem as if Chekhov identifies with Anna as she struggles to find her social identity and wrestles with her desires and the needs of those she loves. This tone gives the story a melancholy mood and leads to a bittersweet conclusion. The ending seems happy for Anna, yet the reader is left to wonder what the ending represents. Did her father and husband receive the dues for their behavior? Are Anna’s actions a normal product of the transformation from youth to adulthood, or did she come to completely discard respect and

Service dogs are allowed in places that other pets are not allowed to go. Any dog can be a service dog. A dog does not have to be specially trained to be a service dog. There are many different kinds of service dogs. I am not talking about breeds, I am talking about the different jobs that service dogs do.
This story mostly takes place in a vacation spot called Yalta. Throughout the whole story Yalta is explained as peaceful, romantic and with magical surroundings. The weather is warm and the scenery consists of white clouds over the mountaintops. The flowers smell of sweat fragrance and there is a gold streak from the moon on the sea. The two main character’s Gurov and Anna visit this vacation spot to get away from the lives that they are unhappy with. Both are unhappily married. The author explains Gurov as a women’s man, women are always attracted to him. However he thinks of women as the lower race. Knowing that women liked him, he always just played the game. He was always unfaithful to his wife. When he sees’s Anna walking around in Yalta with her dog he thought of it as just another fling. The character Anna is a good honest woman. When she is unfaithful to her husband for the first time she starts to cry to Gurov. She explains how she despises herself for being a low woman. This was the first time a person was not happy with Gurov. The soon realizes that she is unlike other women and describes her as strange and inappropriate. The story then takes a twist and Anna is to return home to her husband who is ill. This was their excuse that they need to part ways forever and stop this affair. Yet when Gurov returned home to Moscow he found himself lost without her. The
The story “The Darling” by Anton Chekhov, illustrates a woman that is lonely, insecure, and lacking wholeness of oneself without a man in her life. This woman, Olenka, nicknamed “Darling” is compassionate, gentle and sentimental. Olenka is portrayed for being conventional, a woman who is reliant, diligent, and idea less. Although, this story portrays that this woman, known as the Darling needs some sort of male to be emotionally dependant upon, it is as if she is a black widow, she is able to win affection, but without respect. Only able to find happiness through the refection of the beliefs of her lovers, she never evolves within the story.
