If it were not for the invention of paper, millions of ancient documents would be unknown today. This innovation was the most important and amazing development of ancient China. Why you ask? Paper is a material that is used to disseminate information through written communication. It is derived from the word papyrus from a plant found along the Nile River in Egypt. In global cultural development, paper was the key element for advancement. In various places around the world, people had similar items to write on, but unlike the paper we use today, the ancient Chinese used bone, stone, and wood. This made it extremely heavy to carry. They tried wooden scrolls made out of bamboo, but carrying this was tiring. They even tried silk, but this was very expensive and not everyone could afford to purchase it. Finally, the inventor of paper came along, and life became easier. To begin with, the inventor of the paper was a man by the name of Cai Lun. He was born in Guiyang, China during the Eastern Han Dynasty in 50 C.E. During his older years, he served as a court eunuch and became a paperwork secretary. Before his invention, ancient China tried bark, fishnets, seaweed, rice, straw, grass, and numerous other things to make paper out of. The day came in 105 C.E. when Cai …show more content…
Can you imagine life without it? This was one of China's biggest contributions for human civilization. From the spread of it to the contributions and development of it, Cai Lun changed the world. All of the wonderful things we have today would not be possible if not for this man. This innovation is considered to be one of the four greatest inventions of ancient China. The countless uses for paper could go on forever. Once heavy and thick in the beginning, to perfected, refined, and mass produced today, this truly is a significant product that the whole world should be grateful and thankful for. Cai Lun is a true

It caused a change in their culture because with paper they can now pass down culture easier than before. Before its invention the writing surfaces that were used were, bones, tortoise shells, and bamboo slips. But as the Chinese civilization started to grow they proved to themselves that these writing surfaces won’t work because of the bulk and weight.

Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the movable type printing press changed the world. It changed religion, literature, and geography. He used molds instead of having scribes handwrite books. It helped produce written works at a much faster rate than previously. This made them cheaper, and more affordable to the less fortunate. This increased the literacy rate. Gutenberg’s original printing press was invented in Germany, but quickly spread throughout Europe (Document 2). Gutenberg’s creation is no doubt one of the most useful things we have in today’s world.

China was without a doubt one of the most innovative countries by reason of their many advances made throughout the Shang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Numerous accomplishments were archived by this empire. Their form of government was based on Dynasties, which are series of rulers from the same family. Different dynasties brought out different successes, such as the famous Great wall, which was a 13,170 miles fortress built around around 206 A.C. by millions of people. This structure was ordered to build by China’s first emperor, Qin, in the interest of protecting the Empire from invaders. Another extraordinary Chinese invention was paper. This universal utensil was created in the 2nd century B.C. by Cai Lun. The creating of this material
One of the major lasting effects was the Han Dynasty’s changes to the economy. ... gunpowder and porcelain of the Tang, and the compass and paper money of the Song, were perhaps ancient China’s most lasting and impactful inventions. Our whole lives could be different. A fireworks-less 4th of July, or maybe a world in which it costs 40lbs of copper for a loaf of bread. A world in which we live with porcelain-less toilet urinals. Oh the horror. On a more serious note, without the invention of gunpowder, this world will have seen less severe wars and longer reigns of peace, because wars without guns last much longer and cost a lot. This would prevent needless wars. So as to how beneficial gunpowder was to society, I think it did more harm than good. So remember, every time you’re at a urinal you can smile to yourself, because you know you’re urinating on what is essentially China.

Middlebrook in 1899. William didn’t just invent the paperclip, he also invented the machine that makes them.” Mr. Middlebrook’s patent was bought by a manufacturing company,
Paper is made from cellulose fibbers, which are found in all plant cell walls. When a mixture of water and fibbers is filtered through a fine screen, the fibbers tangle together to form a sheet of paper. As the wet sheet is dried chemical bonds form between the molecules in cellulose fibbers next to one and other. This gives the sheet of paper its strength. The grade and type of any paper depends on the fibbers and processes used in making it.
