Approximately twenty-five years ago, most of one’s entertainment came from spending time together, playing outside, and watching television with loved ones or friends. Computers were something that the rich people had in their homes and the internet was not on very many peoples list as a must have. However, the internet has become a necessity in homes all around the world. Most interactions take place online on websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many more. Yet technology did not stop with the introduction of the internet on one’s home computer it went a step further with the introduction of smart phones that have put the power of the internet into the hands of almost everyone. However, there is a dark side to this technological advance for it has made all types of pornography, “the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction” (Pornography, 2012) readily available to all with just a tap of a button or a swipe on a screen. Some would laugh at the fact that pornography is a problem and it is destroying lives every day. Some would say it is natural, it is ones first amendment right to freedom of speech, or that it keeps one from sexual crimes. Yet internet pornography is on the rise one study says, “Every second, $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography, 28,258 Internet viewers are viewing pornography, 372 Internet users are typing adult search terms into search engines, and every 39 minutes, a new pornographic video is made in the United States” (Enough is Enough, 2014). Eating disorder facilities are helping thousands fight the addiction of food related problems. There are also porn addiction rehab centers and some insurance companies are willing to pay some of the cost. “According to Cambridge University scientists, pornography is actually an addiction that provokes a response in your brain similar to that of drugs and alcohol” (EXPOSED! PORN IS ADDICTIVE, 2014). Pornography addiction is as real as any other addiction. So why is it hard for some to realize that pornography is a growing problem and not an answer to ones need for sexual fulfillment? In an article written by George Collins, a recovering sex addict, he states, “Many thousands of people, mostly men, are investigated, reprimanded, and fired for downloading porn” (Collins, 2012). Pornography has traveled from causing problems in ones home to ones place of work; since the need for ones sexual high outweighs more important factors in their lives. So many have bought into the lie that pornography is not addictive, for there are no harmful chemicals entering the body.
