Martin Luther and Cosimo de’Medici are known as some of the most important and influential people on the Western culture. Martin Luther shaped the Western culture socially and religiously with powerful words, while Cosimo de’Medici impacted the economy and politically through money and power. Cosimo de’Medici changed Florence in many ways by contributing to the Republic of Florence with his strong hand in the establishment of some of the most infamous renaissance masterpieces. Cosimo de’Medici ruled Florence without actually being in power in the political system. Though Cosimo did not actually hold any position in the civil service structure he was the main holder in works of art that drew people from all over the world to look at the beauty. Although Luther was one of the only that was against the Catholic Church, due to his ideas and influence in writings he was able to acquire people to fight with him. Luther began to write scriptures of how the church should be run but in different dialects. Luther’s ideas soon formed the religion Lutheranism. He had many supporters of all kinds, cities all around were becoming Lutheran because it advocates the justification of “by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone.” Lutheranism also advocates the doctrine of “glory to God alone.” Those are two main points that the Catholic Church did not follow. In these Thesis’ Luther basically criticized the church’s wrongful practices and exposed the church’s corruption in order to bring about change in the church. Luther is quoted in Document 3 from his 95 thesis’ “Christian’s should be taught that he who gives to a poor man, or lends to a needy man, does better if he bought pardons.” Luther believed that actions, such as helping others did way more toward saving a person’s soul than buying a pardon did. He saw through the idea that one could by their way into heaven. He brought about new ideas such as God’s grace is the only way into heaven, not buying indulgences, or simply participating in church activities. His ideas eventually spread out all over Europe and his followers formed a group calling themselves Lutherans. This eventually became a protestant denomination, where Luther preached ideas, and his version of christianity. Also other reformist such as John Calvin had their own ideas, like predestination, and that everyone was full of sin until they were saved by christ. “We must resist the lust of the flesh, which, unless kept in order, overflows without measure.” (Document 6) Calvin believed that everyone was filled with this sinful “lust” that could not be kept in order without the power of christ. Calvin also started a sect of christianity nicknamed Calvinist after their leader. Renaissance art history began as civic history; it was an expression of civic pride. The first such history was Filippo Villani's De origine civitatis Florentiae et eiusdem famosis civibus, written about 1381-82. Florentine artists revived an art that was almost dead, Villani asserts, just as Dante had restored poetry after its decline in the Middle Ages. The revival was begun by Cimabue and completed by Giotto, who equalled the ancient painters in fame and even surpassed them in skill and talent. Lorenzo De Medici can be considered as one of the most influential men of the 13th century. His work in political affairs and administration were renowned in all Italy and his family could count on him in every aspect. Lorenzo was also a promoter of a new period called Renaissance. He was one of the first “mecenate” to explore this new way of art. In this project, I will concentrate how he developed art in Florence, giving a clear example through an Artist of that period that was working for him: Sandro Botticelli. The renaissance and the reformation brought about the changes necessary for the development of the modern western world. In addition, these two events brought about new light and hope to a continent that was full of war, plague and death. We may not think of these things today, but the Renaissance and Reformation brought about the conditions for us to exist how we do in the present. From the first crusader knight to step into the Holy Land, to the Peace of Augsburg, the renaissance and reformation will be remembered as the two of the most important events in history, now, and for many years to come.
The renaissance and the reformation were two of the most significant changes in history that has shaped our world today. If you examined both the renaissance and the reformation there were many differences and similarities from both. One of the main contrasts was that the reformation was all about the way to reform the church, and the renaissance had a much more secular view. Some of the similarities were that they both were about accepting new ideas whether artistic or religious, and they both had leaders who were corrupt. Florence, Italy was a city just like any other during the Renaissance. It was city of 50,000 people, less than there were in Paris and Venice but more than most other European cities. The busiest parts of the city were the Ponte Vecchio, a place lined with markets and houses, the neighborhood of the Orsanmichele and Mercato Vecchio, or the Old Market. Florence was a place of beauty and leisure. A Venetian visitor once said, “There is in my opinion no region more sweeter than that wherein Florence is a placed for Florence is situated in a plain surrounded on all sides by hills and mountains…And the hills are fertile cultivated, pleasant…” (Unger, pg. 1). Florence was a very prosperous city; it made fortunes off of wool and banking trades. A certain Florentine family contributed to the vast wealth as well.
