When designing this house, Thomas Jefferson was inspired by the Neoclassical style. The Neoclassical style was influenced by the rise of democracy, reason, and a return to the styles of ancient democratic governments. Jefferson wanted a design that would reflect the stability and timelessness of the Greek and Roman styles, a style that would reflect some of the values of those time periods. As the forefather of democracy, elements of Greek architecture are clearly evident in Jefferson's design. The buildings porch is reminiscent of a Greek temple, with a post-and-lintel structure, pediment, entablature, and doric columns.
