The Harlem Renaissance was the development that was formed in the 1920s which became the inspiration for African American culture that flourished throughout the nation. It is important because the Harlem Renaissance was considered as the golden age for the African Americans. Without the Harlem Renaissance then the Africans wouldn’t be able to express themselves or influence others. This is important for people to learn because without the Harlem Renaissance then how would African Americans be able to be successful in music, art, and more back then and today.
First of all, the Harlem Renaissance was formed in a neighborhood called Harlem in New York City and the African Americans built a community to “express artistic development, racial pride, a sense of community, and political organizations” (History.com, Staff). The community was formed by the great migration which was when thousands or more African Americans migrated to the north from the south due to difficulties. During this time, the Africans were able to expressed themselves in many different ways which influenced many people including white people. African Americans were able to start something new, unique, different which grabbed the attention of everyone in the nation. White people were so amazed with the uniqueness that they traveled to Harlem to experience the nightclubs and more. African Americans who became famous during the 1920s influenced many people back then and today. Although it is most commonly associated with the literary works produced during those years, the Harlem Renaissance was much more than a literary movement; similarly, it was not simply a reaction against and criticism of racism. The Harlem Renaissance inspired, cultivated, and, most importantly, legitimated the very idea of an African-American cultural consciousness.
