When English Language Learners, educators across the country (and globe) embark on adventure that enriches not only the lives of their students, but their own lives as well. As I have learned through my personal experiences at International Newcomer Academy (Fort Worth, TX), ELL classrooms are special because they bring all involved back to their early days. Learning language and in particular grammar takes us as humans back to our beginnings when we first were children appreciating the beauty of the world and trying to communicate with others. Did we ourselves learn proper grammar in school at a young age or did we develop our own sense of grammar over time, indirectly, due to experiences? Attending boarding school, students grow closer to teachers than they may otherwise at a public school and because of that I have a very close bond with Mrs. Karen Gold, ESL teacher at The Governor’s Academy. Interviewing Mrs. Gold, I got a strong impression of the necessity of teaching grammar skills to English Language Learners. “While it would certainly be easier for students to pick up grammar on their own,” Gold said, “it is our responsibility as educators to ensure that students have the skills they need to be successful in life.” Mrs. Gold in speaking with me elaborated on the importance of teaching grammar by comparing it to coaching a …show more content…

While not having to teach grammar would certainly make a teacher’s life easier, what is best for the student always comes first. Certainly students on their own could get a pretty good understanding of English grammar, but that is not enough. Teaching the language to students is not just about preparing them to succeed in school, but also about leading them to have successful communication in life. Having a poor background in grammar can harm a student in the fact that they may not be taken seriously, and more often then not they will be misunderstood. By taking time here and there to perfect a student’s grammar will make a lifetime of difference in helping them to appreciate the beauty of language while also being able to effectively speak, listen, read, and write for the rest of their
