Racism or Pride The Confederate flag is a symbol of the South remembering the fight fought against the Union trying to protect their secession in the Civil War. Some see the flag as a symbol of rebellion where others see it as preserving how America became America. On either side of the debates, arguments are strong and valid. For years, politicians have attempted to have the flag removed from South Carolina’s capitol building, but none have succeeded until now. Recent events, including the most recent shooting, have jumpstarted more debates throughout the country. The shooting took place in Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston by alleged shooter, Dylann Roof. Roof entered the church around 8pm and stayed for more than an hour before standing up, shooting, and killing nine. Among those dead, South Carolina senator and pastor of Emanual AME Church, Clementa Pinckney. Police sent out pictures of the Roof and the car he was spotted leaving in on Thursday morning. By 10:32 a.m., there was a sighting of Roof and at 10:44 a.m. Roof was in custody following a traffic stop 245 miles away from the church (Sanchez and Payne; Shaprio). In looking into Roof and his past, authorities found images of him with an American flag burning. In others, he is holding the confederate flag with guns.
