The nutritional value of an individual's diet depends on the balance of food that is eaten over a certain period of time as well as what the individual needs. A balanced diet includes a variety of different foods which is most likely to provide the essential nutrients in a diet. Diet choices do not just increase an individual's health but it prevents infection, chronic diseases, helps wounds heal a lot faster and enhances the immune system. A balanced diet protects an individual against deficiency diseases and chronic diseases as it provides all the essential vitamins and nutrients. Nutritious food is a great source of natural energy. According to Harvard Medical School, eating foods that contain whole grains and unsaturated fats will supply energy for a longer period of time, as opposed to foods that are high in refined sugar and starches (“Eating to Boost Energy”). Although the sugar may give a quick energy boost, it will wear off and leave the body feeling even more tired than before. Sugar and starches both contain glucose, which is the fuel for the brain’s functions.
The column Unhappy Meals informed and listed the meals that affects our nutrition and health today. Having foods that can cause diseases and did not have the right vitamins were said to be avoided. It also contained information on the guidelines for a healthier diet so it would help people get better nutrition, but it did not. The discovery of carbs being the main source of making people gain weight instead of fat was what changed many views of nutrition. Fruits and vegetables was also known to have a specific chemical that lowered a person’s chance of not getting cancer or other harmful diseases.
In order to ensure a healthy eating lifestyle for citizens the government should impose taxes on junk foods and drinks that are that are less in nutritional value than what is recommended to be consumed by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). The extra money from junk food taxes can be used to subsidize actual healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables that seemed to be high priced. Unhealthy foods tend to lead to obesity and health risks. According to Alexandra Sifferlin, (a reporter for TIME who covers health-related issues) “42% of the population will be obese by 2030, which is based on a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”. Many problems will accompany obesity, such as Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes and other health risks.
When utilizing this exercise I would put it motion by doing exactly as the exercise states. It states to have the individual write about a time when they functioned at their best and then reflect on the personal resources that made that functioning possible. When doing this exercise it helps the individual to see their self in a positive light and focus on what they did to maintain and complete accomplishments that they have set for themselves. In doing this, it helps the individual to do some soul searching as well as thinking more positive. It diverts the negative thinking and maintains focus on ways to cope and overcome obstacles.

If you are taught at a young age to have an apple a day and to eat your vegetables, those habits will probably stick with you for the rest of your life. And the same with bad eating habits. In the article, What Should We Eat? the author states, “With tantalizing foods readily available, we need to learn how to make wise choices--but that can be easier said than done.” () I agree that making wise choices can be easier said than done. I have had many experiences where I have sought to eat healthy, but junk food looks more appealing.
