The process of discovering one’s identity involves distinguishing oneself from others through inner character and outer conduct and gaining an understanding of who one is. Because identity is very intricate and complex, it can be defined by from groups or community that one belongs to, through profession, or through roles assumed by the individual. More fluid than fixed, personality and character can change throughout a period of time because experiences and education can change how we act, think, and perceive our surroundings. In the past eighteen years of my life, I have embodied the “big sister” persona in our family and kept true to my Korean heritage as an immigrant. Like other students in the pre-dentistry or pre-pharmacy students who already have set future plans, my goal at University of the Pacific is not to enroll in different courses from different departments to determine what field I want to devote my life to. However, while concentrating on a specific major that will prepare me for a career in dentistry, I can still broaden my mind not only through the education that I receive from professors but also through activities that I engage in and individuals who I create and sustain friendships with. Because college is so diverse with students from different backgrounds, having discussions and interacting with students will encourage me to be more receptive to new ideas. To be able to communicate with individuals who do not necessarily have the same interest as me before learning a technical skill will allow me to become a holistic person with the ability to relate to real people. One of the complaints about health-care professionals is that they can’t relate to real people. Unlike Rose in “I Just Wanna Be Average” who no longer wanted to learn and was satisfied with meeting the average expectations set by teachers in the vocation education track, I want to push myself to overcome my fears, challenges, and any obstacles presented to me.
