There is no doubt, that marijuana should be legalized in Canada and sold just like alcohol. There is one thing in this world that is ultimately the driving force for decision made every single day around the globe. That is money. If the Canadian government legalizes marijuana, the potential to make astronomical amounts of money is truly a reality. Canada is going to generate 124 billion dollars in revenue each year off of the sale of marijuana, the government is expects to save an estimated 1.5 billion dollars by releasing incarcerated prisoners each year, the government is going to save 6 billion in wood pulp production and an increase of tourism is expects to generate an excess of 30 billion dollars for the Canadian government (Beckl). Next, studies have shown that the prohibition of marijuana actually encourages many Canadians to use substances, which are more harmful to their bodies. Seattle chief of police once said, “by prohibiting marijuana, we are actually steering people towards a substance far to many people already abuse, namely alcohol and tobacco” (Stamper). Legalizing marijuana is a healthier alternative for Canadians and would ultimately protect the most important things in life, ones health. The Canadian medical association has admitted that marijuana is “not addictive, occasional use is not harmful and that there is no evidence of mental damage to the human body” (Canadian Medical Association). Through the legalization of marijuana, each of the precious Canadian men, women and children will ultimately life happier and healthier lives.
