A job interview is considered one of the most important conversations in the career of any professional. With so much at stake, it is essential to have the required skills to perform well in an interview, and have a decent chance at achieving the ultimate goal; to get a job offer. There are so many aspects in the interview process that a candidate must prepare for prior to meeting the potential employer. Whether in person, phone interview, a virtual meeting, or through other means, the interview must be viewed as a “sales meeting” where the candidate is ultimately selling him/herself. Knowing prior what the interviewer is going to ask will make the interview go smoother. Out of the three stages the warm up is the most important stage even though it lasts the shortest. Studies suggest that interviewers make up their mind within the first 20 seconds of contact with a candidate. Body language during this part is crucial in order to make a good impression. According to Business Insider, “polls show that 70% of people don’t feel confident that they can give a proper handshake.” This for example, can be perceived as being under confident or dispassionate. Good body language could include standing or sitting up straight or maintaining regular but natural eye contact and not fidgeting. It is important to not only look confident, but feel like you can get the job. On another dressing properly for the occasion could really make or break the interview. During business week at St.Mary’s University, we discussed “Dressing for success.” This term refers to dressing up as a way to differentiate themselves from other candidates.
