There are many things we do in life that we may or may not be aware of. Things that other people usually notice and we consider it normal to do these things. These things are called habits. Habits can be large or small, at home or in public but either way we all do them. Some common habits are chewing on pen tops when you’re deep in thought, putting your keys in the same spot every day when you come home. I have many habits which most people can notice. I have a routine in the morning that I have been doing for about 25 years. I shake my leg whenever in deep thought or I will take my earrings off and leave them wherever I’m sitting. When writing there are similar habits a person can develop over time to help them write. Things like having a favorite chair, sitting in a certain place in their house, or even lying in bed. Habits can help or hinder …show more content…
Now I know you’re probably thinking “oh classical is nice to listen to when trying to think.” Well for me, classical actually puts me to sleep, I prefer to listen to metal, yes metal. As I write this paper I am listening to “Bullet For My Valentine” which I know is not a traditional band or style of music used for thinking but it seems to work for me. I will also listen to “Fiver Finger Death Punch”, “Atreyu”, “In This Moment” or “Sevendust” just to name a few. Most metal or even rock music has a continuous beat of drums that it becomes almost therapeutic, which allows me to relax and focus. I also have to listen to whatever music with headphones. Just listening to it out loud doesn’t have the same results as having a private concert while I’m writing. When listening to music, I find my writing flows from my finger tips with effortlessness. When I don’t listen to music, I’m easily distracted, my mind wanders constantly and my mind never focuses on the task at hand. This habit has allowed me to write better especially when in a time crunch which leads me to my next
The article, “The Power of Habit” (chapter 9), by Charles Duhigg, is about Angie Bachmann who was addicted to gambling. It all started one day when she felt so lonely that she decided to go out and play in the nearest casino. Angie started by setting rules just so she would not become addicted. As days went by Angie slowly started to break her rules and gambled more than what she should of have. Angie lost a lot of money. Although, Harrah’s casino would send her free stuff and vacation trips to get Angie to play more. Angie realized that she had a problem with gambling and went away for a time, but she went back to Harrah’s casino when her parents inherit her money. Angie lost all the money that she inherited and started to get loans
Whether you’re a devoted music enthusiast or you just listen to the radio to pass time, we all listen to music. However, when listening to music, nobody stops to think about what they are doing. Nobody stops to contemplate how the music they are listening to affects them psychologically. We just listen to the music and enjoy ourselves. In fact however, a great deal of research has been done to determine the psychophysiological effects of music. Many studies have been conducted to determine whether music can help people who suffer from psychological and medical disorders, Scholars continually debate whether music can influence behavior, and researchers are attempting to understand what is happening in our brain when we listen to music.
When picking a health habit that I would like to challenge myself, there were many that I want to choose but I want to choose something that I know that I can fully commit to it and know that I can do it. I want to start something small and then in the future if I want to challenge myself then I will gradually go for a health habit that is more challenging. The health habit that I decide to go with was eliminating my intake on soft drinks or drinks that have high sugar including drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup. In addition, I want to drink more water because I notice that I do not drink enough water, therefore, I want to incorporate that into my life. I chose this health habit because I notice that my intake of sugar is high and I want to stop myself from doing it but I cannot be commit to it.
Everyone develops habits in their life, but it depends on whether or not you have an obsession or develop an addiction for it. In Chapter 9 of “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, Angie Bachmann has a gambling addiction which led her to massive debts. She is a wife of Brian Thomas and have 3 daughters. Angie Bachmann should be held accountable for her gambling debts because her set of rules weren’t working, was tempted by Harrah’s perks, and her environment shaped her to become addicted.
One of the most important habits in life is being proactive. For example, you choose if you want to be a proactive person or a reactive person. The book states, “Each day you and I get about 100 chances to choose whether to be proactive or reactive.” Proactiveness is blaming problems on oneself instead of another person. You are responsible for making mature decisions that help rather than hurt personal growth. To be proactive is to take charge of your own life as author Sean Covey states, “ You are in charge of your own life, nothing else is really possible.” It pays to be proactive, but it takes effort and time since it means making things happen for yourself- not waiting.
No matter what you listen to, music has a way to “play with our emotions”. For example, if you listen to Tchaikovsky (classical) you may feel calm, and if you listen to Eminem (rap) you may feel hyper. If the music you listen to makes you feel good, it is good for you, Daniel Levitin, a Neuroscientist who focuses mainly on music, explains in an interview.
Another important thing to me when writing, is that I can not have any distractions near
While this isn 't new news, here are some great tactics that plan around this that can really help you out!
Some people believe that songs with lyrics and melody can distract a student while studying, and hence, the speed of doing work will decrease. However, it must be recognized that there are other types of music, such as classical or instrumental music. These types of music promote in gaining higher concentration than compared to music with lyrics. As Cho suggests, with this state, when the brain is relaxed and calm, work is d...
In other hand, sound or music could cure one’s stress. Different people deal with different music; some people like rock metal, pop, soul music, jazz and so on. Music could let people’s mind feel calm as well relax. Listening to music can have a very relaxing effect on people’s minds and bodies, especially slow or quiet classical music. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on dealing stress. Relaxing is a way most important to settle down the emotion; when emotion calm and relax, stress will be gone away. As music can absorb our attention, it acts as a distraction at the same time it helps to explore emotions. This means it can be a great aid to meditation, helping to prevent the mind wandering. Greenberg Jerrold give example of how music make one clam, “When people are still baby in their mother’s womb, the heart beat always affect them through which it has bring calm and protective to them.” (2004, p.199). Hence, a sound, a rhythm, a beat has naturally direct send message to one’s mind that bring him calm, relax, safe just like a baby under protection of a mother.
I believe that habit is, indeed stronger than reason. However, to completely prove this statement we should first understand what exactly constitutes a habit. Habits can be anything from day to day routine like brushing our teeth or combing our hair to the very knowledge we are taught. It is a tendency to do something routinely or on a regular basis or an automatic reaction to certain situations (I want to rethink my definition). Habits are often hard to give up and habitual urges can often be stronger than reason. For example, our sleep patterns are part of our habits. If I were to go to sleep at 3:00am every night, but one day choose to go to bed at an earlier time (say 9:30pm), it would be difficult to simply go to bed at that time despite being aware of the amount of sleep I need to be productive. My body would be used to sleeping at a certain time and altering that habit would be difficult.
A habit can be many things, some good, some not so good. Everyone has habits that they would like to change and maybe improve upon. I believe the majority of habits I have are good ones but some are not. These bad habits are the ones I will talk about.
Listening to music releases dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is known not only for improving mood but also increasing motivation and emotional stamina. But the benefits that come from listening to music affect more than just the way we feel. Studies have shown that when listening to the right style of music at the right decibel level, students have been able to concentrate better. For studying purposes, this mainly applies to classical music. Many school teachers and professors argue that music is simply distracting, or so stimulating that it inhibits a student’s ability to focus. However, when classical music has few words, or as is often found, few English words, the mind isn’t as easily distracted by the meaning or idea of the song. In fact, what is sometimes interpreted as chaotic in classical music can provide a high enough level of exertion for your brain to comprehend, that it stimulates high l...
Habits of mind refer to ways of approaching learning that are both intellectual and practical and that will support students’ success in a variety of fields and disciplines. They are coping strategies that deal with problems one may face relating to schooling, which were developed to understand how students could best approach any problem they might encounter. Habits of mind involves more than skillful and persistent problem solving, in fact it involves knowing how to implement clusters of behaviors to manage difficult situations. American educational reformer Horace Mann once observed that “habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it.” The intent is to help students get into the habit of behaving intelligently. When one draw upon these intellectual resources, the results are more powerful and of greater significance than if he or she fail to engage in such patterns of knowledgeable behavior.
It is very hard for people to accept their mistakes, but the hardest part is to correct them since no one is perfect and it might take some time as well. Some people think they are too perfect in life; unfortunately, I am one of those who believe it. However, thinking that I am a perfect person does not make any harm to people, but, when I come back to reality and see things around me from a different point of view, I realize that are my bad habits the ones hurting my family and friends. Therefore, being always late, being lazy, and drinking heavily has marked my family and friends deeply, causing on me a bad reputation and a bad person in life.
