Every person in the United States is entitled to certain rights. These civil rights make the US unique in comparison to the rest of the world. Most recently, players in the NFL taking a knee in protest during the singing of the national anthem prior to the start of the game have sparked controversy. The player’s right to kneel should not be infringed upon because they are not breaking any bylaws, the Constitution guarantees rights to everyone, and finally, the act itself is not disrespectful. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick was solo in kneeling during the anthem to draw attention to the mistreatment of blacks at the hands of police officers. Whilst his action of peaceful protest caught the attention of the country and soon, there are a large number of people who feel that there is a time and a place for protest and while these athletes are essentially at “work” while protesting, they need to focus solely on that task. “[they] paid millions to put on a show, and if an NFL owner wants his players to stand, then that should just be considered part of the show…” (Wong & Quintero, 2018). While it states they require the players to be present on the sidelines, how they should act is a bit flexible and open to interpretation. The required behavior is yielding because of one operative word: should. This means that they would like them to stand at attention, etc. however, they do not require this.
