At recent NFL football games, some athletes have chosen to take a knee during the National Anthem. This is to protest the racial injustice and police brutality in our country. These acts of protest have raised controversy and public awareness. To counter these protests, Mike Pence walked out on a Colts game after athletes chose to kneel instead of stand. Before, President Trump had tweeted, “Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem. Respect our Flag and our Country!” This publicity of the issue raised controversy and debates throughout the country. David Corn, an American political journalist, tweeted “The kneel will now become a sign of opposition to Trump.”

Football is not the only sport in which athletes are taking a stand for their views, Megan Rapinoe, a soccer player took a knee as well in protest with Kaepernick. Howard University cheerleaders took a knee as well during a football game. Even the entire Indiana Fever basketball team took a knee together.
According to the 2017 Official Playing Rules of the National Football League, there are no rules, procedures, or necessary conduct when it comes to the National Anthem. Only actions that are violent, suggestive or offensive against a person or group is punishable. Kneeling in protest cannot affect the player to be benched by the Football League.
