During an interview, one should dress appropriately. Appearance is the first thing the interviewer looks upon your arrival. The way you look, the way you are dressed, and the way you present yourself already says a great deal, about what kind of person you are. Talking is one part of the interview, presenting yourself in a fashionable matter is another important part. In the course packet, in chapter 11, on page 300, one of the abiding “rules of the game”, meaning interview, is to dress appropriately. Dressing appropriately includes not only wearing good, business casual clothes, but also how you physically look. Having proper hair length, or right amount of perfume, and having a pleasant smell. This point involves a few factors. First, you should always stay positive because that brightens the mood of the interviewer. One example of avoiding the negative is criticizing your past employers or job experience. In the course packet, on page 299, one of the “rules of the game” is to avoid the negative. As well as in the article “Job Interview Do's and Don'ts” from The Balance, reiterate the same point of not criticizing your past employers. If you really need to make a point about your previous employer, then make it quick and short. Otherwise, you are a complainer, and just act as if you are not even appreciative of your previous job. This shows your interviewer that you are not grateful, and would think that you would make the same complaints about them if you worked at this new position. Second, you should avoid talking about your weaknesses. You might think that you are being honest, and showing the interviewer who you really are, but all you are doing is bringing yourself down, and only hurting yourself. From the class interviews, we saw that interviewers are looking for strengths, and unique strengths. The only weakness brought up during an interview is the one that you may have faced in the past. Therefore if you continue on the topic of your weak areas, you are not helping yourself, you are digging your own grave. Interviewers want to hear your strengths, as well as how you can acquire more skills. Lastly, you should also avoid talking about your personal problems. In the articles; “Job Interviewing Dos and Don’ts for Job-Seekers” and “16 Crucial Dos and Don'ts of Interviewing” both elaborate on how it is a turn off for interviewers to hear sob stories from their interviewees. You are interviewing to help better an organization or a company with your unique skills. Boasting or even talking about your problems is not of any concern to the interviewers.
