“We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.” - Mr Frank, Act 2 Scene 3. The Holocaust was a tragedy which need not be repeated. It was a horrible period in time in which over 5,830,000 Jews were killed. Hitler, the dictator who created the Concentration camps, hated Jews. He thought that anyone who didn’t look, act, or speak like a German was evil, and shouldn’t be treated humanely. Thus, the Holocaust took place. He killed and tortured many Jews, and anyone who was caught hiding them. He taught his soldiers that Jews weren’t human, and shouldn’t be treated as such. Few survived the Concentration camps, and many died from illness or starvation.
The Holocaust took place during World War II, and often times the Jews would look to attackers to save them from the oppression of Hitler. Many Jews went into hiding, such as Anne Frank and her family. In The Diary Of Anne Frank, we read about how her family tried to survive the Holocaust, but ultimately were discovered. They were forced into hiding, and forced to put their friends - Mr. Kraler and Miep - in danger. If they were discovered, Mr. Kraler and Miep would be punished for hiding them. They all changed in the time they were stuck in The Annex, a hidden room above Mr. Frank’s old office. Anne changed from an immature, bossy loudmouth, into a mature young lady. Peter changed from being a resentful teenager, into a respectable young man. Mr. And Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, and Margo all changed as well. The effect the Holocaust had on them, the good and the bad, changed them all. I have grown a better understanding of how awful the Holocaust was, and I feel as if Anne Frank helped that understanding a
