Six million people were killed during the time period known as the Holocaust. But, many, many more suffered due to Adolf Hitler’s horrific plan. Anne Frank and her family hid in an Annex for 25 months to avoid being taken to a concentration camp. And in the drama written by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, eight people crowded inside of a secret Annex that was hidden by a bookcase were hoping to survive until the liberation of Holland was over. What started as a hiding place for a few months, soon stretched out to be over 2 years. Many historical events portrayed in Anne Frank caused changes in the drama. Changes in the Characters as well as their changes of actions were revealed due to historical events.
As the characters experienced historical events throughout the drama, the relationships of the characters changed greatly depending on the event. “ Did you change your mind, the way I changed my mind about you?”(Hackett, 174). It changed the relationship between them, causing Peter to kiss Anne. “ Peter grabbed her awkwardly in his arms, kissing her on the cheek.” (Hackett, 174). Despite several notable contrasts between Anne Frank’s life presented in the play, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” and other accounts of Jewish people in hiding during World War II, the lives of these Jews had more similarities than differences. These people were similar in the way that they lived the same schedule every day. Anne and the other Jews relied on their helpers, who risked their lives willingly, to provide food and other human necessities for them, as well as tried to include aspects of their old lives before the Holocaust into their new lives in hiding. Wisps of burnt-out curtains drape over shattered window frames, fluttering helplessly like a bird with injured wings. Pieces of wood collapse snapping once they hit the ground. Smoke swirls around in the wind. No sound can be heard except for the occasional sobs escaping the chapped lips of people visiting what is left of their homes. The once busy city of Amsterdam is now nothing but a city of forgotten souls. In 1942, the Franks and the Van Daans moved into a warehouse located in Amsterdam to escape the perilous world outside, where the Holocaust was taking place. Jews like the Franks and the Van Daans had their rights taken away from them. The Gestapo, the police working for the Nazis, rounded up people to be sent to concentration camps, where people worked to death. Margot Frank was one of them. Many Jews had to leave the country to escape, while the two families, and later on a man named Dussel, lived on the top floor of the warehouse called the Secret Annex. Living in such a small space and having sparse food with so many people was not easy. On weekdays, not a noise was to be made otherwise the workmen below would hear them. Food and other items had to be brought in by Miep and Mr. Kraler, who risked their lives to help the members of the Secret Annex. Throughout the holocaust, many Jews survived by going into hiding to escape the harsh fates and realities that would otherwise await the opressed. The Diary of a Young Girl allows readers to witness and experience a small idea of what Jews in hiding during the holocaust suffered. Some may have lost one's life, but Otto Frank, Anne's Frank's father, survived the holocaust through hiding. The secret annex became the shelter for Otto Frank, his family, and several others Jews starting July sixth, 1942(www.annefrank.org). Though she went through awful things that many people will never experience, she always kept the faith that there was still some good in everyone. She once said, “Despite everything I still believe people are truly good at heart.” Her diary, which she kept while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, shows the triumph of her spirit over the evil in the world even through the pain of adolescence. The Franks and Van Dans were hiding and they suffered many hardships, mentally and physically. Many people in Anne’s situation would have become bitter and resentful, but Anne never would despair.
If you have read Anne's actual diary you would know that Anne’s emotional state was completely different than what the playwrights portrayed. In her diary Anne realistically portrays her feelings emotionally and physically, something that the play version simply does not provide. In a particular entry Anne states that “after May 1940 the good times were few and far between” (Frank, June 20, 1942). This is the real Anne. Not a censored, washed out, over optimistic interpretation that the playwrights implement.
Experiences of an orphaned child are never pleasant and Anne has it no different. Being only three months old when both parents die due to a fever is devastating on a child on its own, but being reminded constantly is what makes bearing that pain even harder.
