“Yesterday, December 7, 1941 a date which will live in infamy, the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. We will gain inevitable triumph, so help us God.” (“Franklin D. Roosevelt”) This was a quote given by Franklin D Roosevelt a day after the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese ships. The United States was trying to remain neutral throughout the war, the president even passed the Act of Neutrality which prohibited merchant ships to access war zones and other americans aiding other countries in the war. The history of the Gliders is one of struggles and conflict. They started when the United States needed a way to infiltrate behind enemy territory and do some fighting form the inside disrupting the enemy's flow and structures. Their training for their missions was dangerous even if they put hours of training in day and night. EVentually the night missions were phased out over all due to the lack of sight and the many casualties from the trainings, some from crashing into trees or landing in open water and drowning making the glider’s missions only performable from dawn till dusk. Even then after all their training many gliders would not land on or near the landing zones, many were shot down out of the sky by enemy fire or landed and swaps then killed by enemy fire. Of the 6,500 soldiers to land 1,500 were reported missing, killed in action or injured. If there were no gliders during the Battle of the Bulge things would have turned out for the worse for the allies and Nazi Germany might have won the battle and got it’s own way. For example General Anthony McAuliffe’s troops were surrounded by enemy fire, almost 500 of his troops were wounded, many of them severely wounded and needed medical assistance. The Pacific war was long a with extremely large casualties on both sides of Japan, AMerica and Great Britain. Many of them occurring in Leyte which was an American island base in the Philippines. Japan had made the Philippines a prime target due to the location which made it easier for them to get supplies and resources from the east Indies while at the same time gaining access to the abundant resources in the Philippines. On October 20,1944 Japanese soldiers streamed onto the island attacking the American soldiers who lied in wait for the attack on the island and in their ships. The battle would become on of the most intense naval battles in World War Two and the fighting on the island would come to resemble the fighting from World War One. The Japanese would attack ships, and even American Airfields with the american fighting back the major counteroffensive attack. The Japanese continued fighting until April 1945 then the Americans gained back control of most of Leyte by Christmas with thousands of Japanese and American soldiers dead. Next, the fighting of Okinawa island, which was a small island four hundred miles off the coast of Japan, making it a prime target for a United States military base for the remainder of World War Two since then they would be able to launch attacks on Japan’s mainland and keep an eye on their movements.
